Grammy-winning producer William Orbit passed away on July 23 at his residence, according to a Friday, August 7, announcement from family and friends on social media. The British studio visionary, who transformed the sound of popular music in the late 1990s and early 2000s, was 69 years old. His family did not disclose the cause.
The family requested privacy while mourning someone “who will be greatly missed by us and by so many whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness,” the statement said. Tributes from longtime collaborators and devoted listeners flooded social media as word of his death spread.
A Career That Spanned Decades
William Mark Wainwright was born in December 1956 in Palmers Green, a London suburb. At 16 he abandoned formal education to pursue a career in music, eventually establishing himself as a studio architect renowned for blending massive pop melodies with lush electronic production. His discography included 12 solo studio albums, with the most recent effort, “The Painter,” released in 2022.
Before achieving global recognition, he launched the synthpop ensemble Torch Song in 1980 and issued solo material throughout the 1980s. He also created the dance project Bassomatic.
Madonna and the Turning Point
His breakthrough moment came with Madonna’s 1998 album “Ray of Light,” where he served as lead producer. The project merged electronic dance music, trip-hop, ambient techno and pop into a groundbreaking sonic landscape for the superstar, earning four Grammy Awards including best pop album. The record remains considered among the Queen of Pop’s greatest artistic achievements.
Years after those recording sessions, Orbit recalled that he and Madonna ignored conventional wisdom and never worried about repercussions, saying he stayed proud of the album and felt it still held up.
Their collaboration continued with “Beautiful Stranger” in 1999, a track Orbit co-wrote and performed on that climbed to No. 2 in the UK and appeared in the second “Austin Powers” film. The song captured a Grammy for best song written for visual media. He contributed to Madonna’s 2000 album “Music” and in 2012 produced six songs for her “MDNA” record, including “Masterpiece,” which took home a Golden Globe for best original song.
Wide-Ranging Influence
His talents stretched far beyond the dance-pop realm. In 1999 he helmed Blur’s album “13,” pushing the Britpop outfit toward a grittier, more experimental aesthetic that spawned the hit singles “Tender,” “Coffee & TV” and “No Distance Left to Run.” He later contributed to their song “Sweet Song” from the 2003 album “Think Tank.”
Orbit co-wrote “Pure Shores” with All Saints member Shaznay Lewis for the 2000 film “The Beach,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The single topped the UK chart at No. 1. His work with Pink on “Feel Good Time,” featured in the 2003 film “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” reached No. 3 in the UK and garnered another Grammy nomination. In 2002 he produced U2’s “Electrical Storm,” and in 1999 he contributed to Spice Girl Mel C’s debut solo album “Northern Star.” His resume eventually expanded to include Britney Spears.
His solo work earned critical acclaim as well. The 2000 album “Pieces in a Modern Style,” an electronic-classical fusion project, received a Grammy nomination and peaked at No. 4. A dance interpretation of Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” from that album reached No. 2 on the singles chart.
