In a tragic collision in central Japan, a pedestrian lost her life when a man plummeting from a high-rise apartment struck her on the sidewalk below — and survived the impact that killed her.
Shinsei Taguchi, 29, fell from a 12-story building in Nagoya during the early hours of July 19, 2026, landing on 23-year-old Houra Inaba as she walked on the pavement with a friend. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. in a neighborhood approximately half a kilometer northeast of Yabacho Station, a stop on the Meijo Line of the city’s municipal subway system, near the downtown loop of the Nagoya Expressway.
Emergency responders transported both victims to a hospital following the collision. Inaba succumbed to hemorrhagic shock and was declared dead at roughly 5:30 a.m. Taguchi, though critically injured and unconscious, remains alive according to authorities.
The woman accompanying Inaba made the emergency call after witnessing the fall. Officers from the Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters arrived within minutes and sealed off the scene to begin their inquiry.

A teenage girl plunged from the twelfth-story terrace of NEWoMan Yokohama in September 2024, striking and killing a 32-year-old company employee from Midori Ward who had been socializing with friends on the street below. The 17-year-old student, who had traveled from Kimitsu City in Chiba Prefecture to the shopping complex attached to JR Yokohama Station south and west of Tokyo, died approximately one hour later. The woman she struck died shortly after impact.
During October 2020 in Osaka, a male high school student, age 17, plunged from a business tower and struck a 19-year-old female university student walking underneath. Both sustained fatal injuries.
