Girl, 15, Awakens During Own Funeral

Guatemala’s Procuraduría General de la Nación is examining whether Yuleidy Ixcotoyac’s parents were negligent after the 15-year-old woke up inside her coffin at her own wake on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026.

Lucrecia Prera, the agency’s deputy prosecutor for children and adolescents, said on the Emisoras Unidas program “A Primera Hora” that holding a wake without scientific confirmation of death can amount to neglect. If the agency finds irregularities by the parents, it can file a criminal complaint.

No one has been charged as of Oct. 16.

The child-protection agency’s team found the family at a private clinic near Huehuetenango, which did not have the equipment for the tests Yuleidy needed, according to reporting on Oct. 16. A judge granted protective measures and ordered her moved to the Hospital Regional de Huehuetenango.

Her father said she is stable and the family is waiting for results.

A Pulse He Could Not Feel

Yuleidy felt severe pain in her chest in the early hours of Oct. 10 and lost consciousness. Her family lives in El Jocote, a village in the municipality of Sacapulas, in the department of Quiché, in rural Guatemala.

Abraham Ixcotoyac, her father and an evangelical pastor, drove her in his vehicle toward a medical center. Nearing the municipality of San Pedro Jocopilas, he pulled over and checked her.

“She was no longer breathing, and I couldn’t feel her pulse on her wrists,” the father said.

No doctor examined her. She never entered a hospital or a health center, and no one issued a death certificate. Ixcotoyac instead drove to a funeral home, bought a coffin and carried his daughter’s body back to the house.

Relatives, neighbors and members of his congregation had already gathered there. Burying a loved one soon after death is a common custom in Guatemala, which is why the casket was purchased immediately. They set the wake for 2:30 p.m. the same day.

The Viewing Window in the Lid

Her mother, Lesvia Ríos, said she refused to accept that her daughter was gone. She was weeping over the wooden casket in the yard of the family home, with mourners pressed around it, when the family opened the small viewing window set into the lid and saw movement inside.

The teenager, in a pink T-shirt, sat up in the box and started to speak. Stunned relatives lifted her out and handed her a cup of water. Loved ones shouted “hallelujah” as the video rolled, and the footage spread on social media far beyond the Guatemalan highlands.

Ixcotoyac told the local channel TV Sac that he was in the patio when the shouting broke out. By the time he reached the coffin, relatives were already pulling his daughter from it.

Accounts place the awakening between seven and eight hours after the family considered her dead.

No Doctor, No Death Certificate

Guatemala’s Public Ministry said prosecutors in Sacapulas, with the regional prosecutor’s office, opened an investigation on Sunday, Oct. 11. They are examining how relatives came to consider the teenager dead without a medical death certificate.

Some reports asserted that the girl had been declared dead at a hospital. Her father is emphatic that she never entered one.

There is no official confirmation of a death certified through a documented clinical evaluation. The episode therefore cannot accurately be described as a medically verified resurrection.

A deep loss of consciousness and other conditions can be mistaken for death, and they require a professional assessment. Without verifiable clinical data, the cause of what happened to Yuleidy cannot be established.

Ixcotoyac said he took her home instead of to a hospital because God had given him a revelation. He said he committed no crime.

Darkness, Then a Miracle

Yuleidy is conscious. She told local media that she was given oxygen afterward and that her hands were still trembling.

She told TV Sac that she saw only darkness and searched for a light before she woke inside the coffin. She called her survival a miracle.

“My heart started hurting really badly, it felt heavy and then I blacked out, like I fainted,” she said, describing the minutes before she blacked out.

Both parents have publicly attributed their daughter’s awakening to a miracle rather than to a mistake. The teenager said she thanks God for being alive.

Online reaction is far more divided. Some viewers called the footage miraculous, others said the girl was left traumatized, and still others called the entire account a religious fabrication.

In the region, the case has reopened the conversation about the importance of professional verification in any medical emergency.
