Beloved TV Comedy Star Dead at 57

Reggie McFadden, a stand-up comedian, actor and writer who reached national audiences through HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam” and the Fox sketch series “In Living Color,” was 57 when he died. Reports of his death began spreading Oct. 4, 2026, and the United States State Department contacted the family; his sister, acclaimed bestselling novelist and creative-writing professor Bernice McFadden, then confirmed the death.

Tanzania, the East African country where he had reportedly made his home for about 18 years, is where he died. According to his sister, the State Department told the family he died there, though the exact timing and the cause of his death are still unknown to relatives.

Cause of Death Has Not Been Disclosed

No funeral home, medical authority or family representative has put out an exact date of death or a medical cause, leaving the circumstances unclear. The family, for its part, says no one has told it how or precisely when he died.

Bernice McFadden, author of “The Book of Harlan,” told the Los Angeles Times: “Our mother is taking it particularly hard, as are his children and other siblings. Reggie was estranged from the family. The last time we saw him was in 2007. We were aware that he was living in Tanzania but knew very little about his life there.”

From Brooklyn to Network TV

Brooklyn, N.Y., was where McFadden, born Nov. 30, 1968, spent his childhood. Comedy became his route toward a different life, and New York’s comedy scene was where he sharpened his material.

His profile widened in 1991 with an appearance on HBO’s influential stand-up showcase “Def Comedy Jam,” a program that served as a launching pad for numerous comedians and introduced him to viewers across the country.

He joined the fifth and final season of “In Living Color” during the 1993-94 television season, appearing in numerous sketches as part of the ensemble. Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, David Alan Grier and the Wayans family all saw their careers launched and elevated by the Fox series.

His other television credits included “Martin,” “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” “Coach,” “Moesha,” “Getting Personal” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” where he played a police officer. On film, he appeared in comedian Adam Sandler’s 2000 comedy “Little Nicky” and in “Jacob’s Ladder.” Reported additional screen credits include the films “The Inkwell,” “Minor Adjustments” (1995) and “Road Kings.”

Stand-up remained central to his professional identity. He performed on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn” and “Last Call with Carson Daly,” recorded a “Comedy Central Presents” special and performed regularly at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and at The Comedy Store on Sunset Blvd. before his move to Tanzania.

A New Life in Tanzania

Later in life, McFadden relocated to Tanzania, spending roughly 18 years building a career away from American television. His Facebook page identified him as the owner of Olduvai Records, described as a gold-mining and entertainment production company in Tanzania, and the company’s website lists a distribution relationship with Sony Music’s The Orchard.

Music projects followed from the label, which reportedly established international distribution relationships as well. Olduvai Records put out the compilation “ENJOY, Vol. 1” in May 2025, blending rap, R&B and Afro-influenced music across the collection. Material of his own, some of it associated with the label, also came out under McFadden’s name.

Tributes From Fellow Comedians

News of his death prompted tributes from fellow comedians and fans, who placed him among a generation of performers who helped shape Black comedy on American television during the 1990s. Comedian Tony Luewellyn called him a veteran member of the comedy community, while comedian Guy Torry honored him as a talented writer and comedian.

Hampton University film studies director Prof. Rel Dowdell said in a statement: “Reggie McFadden was a very talented, veteran comedian and actor whose diverse choices and dedication to his profession were highly evident.”

His mother, Vivian McFadden, survives him, as do his two sons, Jaron and Myles. His sisters, Bernice and Misty, and his brother, Kris, also survive him.
