Driver for Amazon Found Dead Inside Van

A delivery driver working for Amazon died Aug. 11, 2026, after being discovered unresponsive in the cargo area of her van in Fruitland Park, Florida, in an incident that triggered a hazmat-style emergency response when first responders encountered mysterious conditions inside the idling vehicle.

Firefighters donned gas masks and hosed down the unconscious woman before attempting medical intervention, according to Patrick Miranda, a Clark Road resident whose home surveillance captured the scene. Miranda had contacted the Lake County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line around 7:22 p.m. after the Amazon truck sat motionless near the end of his driveway for roughly four hours.

Emergency crews transported the driver to a hospital, where she was declared dead. Authorities have not disclosed her name or what killed her. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Bureau continues to examine the circumstances.

Officer Appeared Lightheaded After Opening Truck

When a deputy reached the scene following Miranda’s welfare check request, the officer first opened the front passenger door and seemed visibly impacted by something emanating from inside, according to Miranda’s account. After opening the rear sliding doors, the deputy located the woman lying in the back of the vehicle, which was still running. Miranda observed the deputy stepping away from the truck and appearing affected by the exposure.

“I see the phone is still plugged in. The backpack is there and again the car is running, but there is no one,” Miranda said. “It seemed kind of strange.”

Miranda noted that both officers and bystanders at the location speculated about what might have caused the reaction. “I’m not sure if there were fumes from either the vent, if there’s a package,” he said. “There was a lot of speculation at the time from both the officers and the other people involved.”

Hazmat Protocol Applied Before Medical Care

The possibility of toxic exposure prompted Lake County Fire Rescue and EMS to deploy firefighters equipped with gas masks. The zone around the delivery truck was secured, and crews used a fire hose to spray the victim to eliminate potential contaminants from her body and clothing before paramedics could start lifesaving measures.

Miranda described emergency personnel as working systematically once they had rinsed the woman. Fire rescue teams stayed on location for several hours following the initial call, seemingly examining and cleaning the interior of the van.

What originally appeared to be an abandoned vehicle report turned into a death investigation with unanswered questions about hazardous materials. No information about the cargo loaded in the van or any particular substance has been confirmed by investigators.

Investigation Continues With No Timeline for Findings

Detectives have not established what caused the woman’s death. “Detectives with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Bureau are continuing to investigate this incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Amazon released a statement offering condolences and confirming full cooperation with local authorities. The company indicated its thoughts remain with the driver’s family and loved ones during what it characterized as a difficult time.

Surveillance video from Miranda’s property documenting the emergency response provides investigators with a visual account of how personnel discovered and handled the scene. Whether fumes or hazardous materials played a role in the death remains a key question under active inquiry, and officials have not provided a schedule for releasing further information.
