Rumer Willis says she has come to see honesty about her father’s illness as something valuable rather than something to hide. In an exclusive interview, the 38-year-old eldest daughter of Bruce Willis called it “important” to talk openly about the frontotemporal dementia that ended the “Die Hard” star’s career, describing the choice as “a gift to be vulnerable.”
She told OK! that people approach her constantly — strangers who want to send love to her father, and others who want to tell her about a relative living with the same condition. She described FTD as “a rampant illness that has never been talked about.” Over the past couple of years, she said, the family has felt an “outpouring of love” from the public.
Rumer, who shares daughter Louetta with ex Derek Richard Thomas, spoke in connection with her partnership with Function, a health membership that offers more than 160 lab tests along with imaging and specialized assessments. She also pointed to The Emma & Bruce Willis Fund, launched in March by her stepmother, Emma Heming Willis, to bankroll FTD research and assist family caregivers. Her hope, she said, is that it helps other families find answers — and that a cure arrives in her lifetime.
That candor follows a summer moment that moved fans around the world: the actor’s appearance at the Aug. 8, 2026, wedding of his youngest daughter, Tallulah Willis. Vogue released photographs from the ceremony on Aug. 14, showing the 71-year-old actor holding his 32-year-old daughter close before she married musician Justin Acee.
A black-and-white image captured him with one arm draped around Tallulah and the other hand gripping his new son-in-law’s. Tallulah, an actress and filmmaker, posted the picture herself, describing “a tender moment” shared with her dad and Justin as the wedding weekend got underway.
The vows were exchanged at Tallulah’s family estate in Idaho before a small group of relatives and friends. Her father looked at ease and smiled throughout, dressed in a short-sleeved collared shirt, loose trousers and a woven hat. For her dress, the bride chose a cream-colored Balenciaga gown made to order.
A Wedding at Home, Layered With Significance
Tallulah passed on the idea of a quiet elopement in favor of the property that shaped her. She told Vogue it was the place where she learned to run free and turned into the dreamer she became, and said Justin now feels stitched into the fabric of it. The two decided early in their relationship that they would keep choosing each other daily. She announced the engagement in an Instagram post in December 2024.
One surprise landed moments before the processional. Tallulah caught sight of her mom seated in the first row, wearing a smile that gave away she was in on something. Then a lone guitar riff came through the speakers, and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s voice followed — a song he had recorded specifically for the couple. The opening line named the bride and groom walking down the aisle, and Tallulah said her jaw dropped in disbelief.
Three of the actor’s daughters come from his marriage to actress Demi Moore, which lasted from 1987 to 2000: Rumer, Scout, 35, and Tallulah, the youngest. Moore, 63, wore a flowing blue satin dress to the ceremony and signed the marriage license as one of the two official witnesses, alongside Scout. Willis married former model and entrepreneur Emma Heming Willis in 2009, and together they raise daughters Mabel, who is 14, and 12-year-old Evelyn.
Years Spent Away From the Spotlight
Public sightings have been rare since his health declined. He stepped away from acting in March 2022, when aphasia was first diagnosed. His family announced in February 2023 that the illness had advanced to frontotemporal dementia, a group of neurological disorders that attack the frontal and temporal lobes — the areas of the brain tied to personality, behavior and language.
Heming Willis, his caregiver, has been frank about what the disease has cost the family. Her book “The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path” arrived in September 2025 and argued for stronger support for caregivers nationwide. Speaking on the “Conversations with Cam” podcast in its Jan. 28, 2026, episode, she said she is thankful her husband does not know he has been diagnosed. Anosognosia — an inability to accurately perceive one’s own condition — is among the neurological symptoms of the disease.
She relocated him out of the family house last year as his symptoms progressed. In August 2025 she explained that the move was made with the couple’s daughters in mind, saying he would want the girls in a home built around their needs instead of his. He lives in a single-story residence now, with caregivers on hand around the clock.
Turning 50 in June brought its own dilemma. On “Today” co-host Hoda Kotb’s “Making Space” podcast earlier this month, Heming Willis said she wasn’t in a celebratory frame of mind and considered letting the birthday pass unmarked until a friend talked her out of it. She said she now measures such decisions by what her husband would have wanted, and she landed on the conclusion that he would have wanted her surrounded by the people she loves.
Fans Overwhelmed by the Photo
Reaction to the wedding pictures poured in from around the internet, a mix of happiness and grief at watching the actor show up for his daughter’s big day. One commenter said tears filled their eyes at the realization that “her dad made it”. Others said they cried seeing him at the ceremony and sent love to the whole family.
Tallulah said the weekend surpassed anything she had pictured. Her mother, she said, was the one who arranged the Coldplay surprise, and she and Justin were left laughing out of sheer joy. Reflecting afterward, she described being overcome with thankfulness and joy as this new phase of her life began, and said the day had exceeded even what she’d dared to imagine.
