Man Electrocuted While Installing Xmas Lights

On November 21, 2024, Antonio Pascual Mateo, a 24-year-old man from Escondido, California, died tragically while setting up Christmas lights at a nearby home.

The incident took place near Idaho Avenue and Skyline Drive when Mateo inadvertently tossed a string of lights over a potent power line, leading to his fatal electrocution. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Mateo was discovered hanging upside down from a tree, secured by his waist harness.

Emergency responders had to patiently wait for San Diego Gas & Electric to disconnect the power to safely reach Mateo. Despite the immediate provision of advanced cardiovascular life support, Mateo was sadly declared dead at Palomar Medical Center.

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) released a statement expressing profound regret over the unfortunate incident. The statement emphasized the company’s commitment to the safety of its customers and the general public. SDG&E extended their deepest sympathies to Mateo’s family and loved ones, recognizing their immense sorrow during this challenging time. The company refrained from sharing more details about the accident out of respect for the grieving family and due to the ongoing investigation.

Mateo, who hailed from Guatemala, was admired for his commitment to his family. A GoFundMe page set up to help with funeral costs and the return of his body home described him as a “brother, a son, and an uncle” who unfailingly cared for his mother and family. The fundraiser has so far generated more than $14,700 of its $20,000 target.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission states that during the festive season, an estimated 160 decorating-related injuries happen daily, nearly half of which involve falls. Electrical injuries and fires also pose significant risks. The commission recommends against stringing more than three incandescent light strands together and warns against overloading electrical outlets.

Jay Hobson, the owner of The Holiday Lighters, underscored the importance of prioritizing safety when setting up holiday decorations. He advised, “Organize your stuff. Taking your time is the best.”

As the holiday season is upon us, safety officials are urging the public to exercise caution when decorating, particularly when working near power lines or using electrical decorations.
