Missing 19-Year-Old Found Dead in River

Ohio’s Middletown Police Department has confirmed the recovery of a body from the Great Miami River. The discovery concludes a search operation that started over the weekend. First responders were called to the scene on N. Verity Parkway in the 4400 block on Sunday, July 7, around 3:45 pm following a report of a body sighted in the river.

The Butler County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as 19-year-old Justin Lewis, Jr. Initial findings indicate the cause of death to be drowning, but the specific manner of death is still under investigation. Inquiries by both the coroner’s office and the Middletown Police Department into the circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing.

Previous reports from Saturday indicated that a teenager had disappeared after being seen entering the river at Miami River Park. The police had issued a notice on social media, advising the public to avoid the area as the search efforts ramped up.

Lewis was reportedly seen entering the river on Saturday evening, triggering a search operation involving multiple agencies. “We were hopeful for a different outcome, but tragically, Justin’s body was found,” stated Middletown Fire Chief Paul Lolli. “Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Several local organizations, including the Middletown Fire Department, participated in the search, utilizing various resources to locate Lewis. Firefighters and police officers meticulously searched the riverbanks and deployed boats for water scanning. Their joint efforts demonstrate the community’s dedication to providing closure for the young man’s family.

The community has expressed sadness over this tragic loss. One local resident, who chose to remain unnamed, remarked, “It’s heartbreaking to see such a young life lost this way. The river can be very dangerous, and this is a stark reminder of that.”

In light of this incident, local officials have reiterated the importance of water safety, especially during the summer months when river activities are prevalent. They stressed the need for caution around or in bodies of water and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.

The authorities are appealing to anyone with information about this case to step forward. The Middletown Police Department is accepting tips and information about the incident.
