In an incident captured on video, an escaped convict, identified as a 29-year-old man from New Hampshire, was shot and killed by police in a Miami Beach Victoria’s Secret store on Thursday, July 27. The convict, Darien Young, was apprehended shoplifting lingerie from the store at Lincoln Road and Jefferson Avenue.
When confronted by store personnel, Young took a woman and her teenage daughter hostage, pulling out a knife. The video shows Young holding one of the hostages by the neck, taking cover behind the store’s checkout counter. The daughter was seen nearby, praying fervently, as Young threatened her.
According to a witness, Young disregarded the responding officer’s commands to surrender his weapon and release the hostages. The situation intensified when Young released the mother and took her daughter. The Miami Beach police officer, concerned for the hostages’ safety, shot Young, bringing the standoff to an end.
Young was rushed to a nearby hospital’s trauma unit in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries. The hostages, a mother and daughter, were left unscathed due to the officer’s decisive action.
