Hikers Who Found Actor Julian Sands’ Remains Share Their Story

A group of hikers stumbled upon the remains of acclaimed British actor Julian Sands on Los Angeles’ Mt. Baldy, where he had gone missing six months earlier, and are now sharing their experience.

Led by Bill Dwyer, the hikers embarked on a challenging climb on June 24, uncovering shoes, bones, and Sands’ driver’s license during their 10-mile trek.

Dwyer described the discovery as surreal. In a Strava blog post titled “Discovery and Recovery of Julian Sands,” he had speculated about their search for the missing actor. Sands, renowned for roles in films such as “A Room With A View,” was reported missing in January, prompting extensive search efforts in the area.

Despite prior warnings about potential remains along the trails and comprehensive search operations, the hikers were shocked to find Sands’ belongings. These included a boot with microspikes, deemed unsuitable for the snowy conditions present at the time of his disappearance.

Sands’ belongings were found in Goode Canyon, a treacherous area difficult to see from afar because of its rugged landscape.

The exact cause and time of Sands’ death are still unclear. In late July, due to the state of his remains, the cause of death was classified as “undetermined.” Such outcomes are typical in these scenarios, noted the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Emphasizing the dangers of winter hiking and nature’s unpredictability, the hikers hope their experience serves as a warning for others exploring the mountains.
