Bruce Willis keeps reappearing in his daughters’ photographs — a kiss on the forehead, a hand held at a wedding — long after he stepped away from the cameras that made him famous.
Kevin Pollak, one of Willis’ oldest friends in Hollywood, told the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast that the actor is surrounded by family and “because of the nature of this affliction he’s not aware that there’s an issue,” in remarks reported Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026.
Pollak, speaking with host Steve Kmetko, described the world around his friend as “a bubble of love and affection,” with Willis’ children by Demi Moore and by his wife, Emma Heming Willis, all close by. “In a very strange unique way, he’s as happy as he’s ever been,” Pollak said.
“I mean, it’s heartbreaking. So rather than crying, I’m laughing at the sort of simple sweet irony of a thriving beast of a man,” he added. His account is a friend’s characterization of Willis’ situation, not a medical update from the actor’s doctors.
Two Diagnoses and No Treatments
Willis’ family announced in March 2022 that he had been diagnosed with aphasia and would step away from acting, and in February 2023 they gave a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia. The aphasia ended his career and severely limited his ability to communicate. FTD has no current treatments, and the family has said it hopes the attention on his condition pushes more awareness and research toward the disease.
Emma Heming Willis said on a podcast in January that her husband has anosognosia, meaning his brain cannot recognize its own decline. “It’s not denial,” she said.
Homes Across the Street in Idaho
Pollak met Willis on “A Few Good Men,” the 1992 courtroom drama in which Pollak played Sam Weinberg opposite Moore, then married to Willis. Willis was shooting “Death Becomes Her” on the next soundstage, and the crew learned to look for him on theirs rather than in his trailer.
During a take of a scene between Pollak and Tom Cruise, with director Rob Reiner nearby, Willis leaned in and whispered that it was like watching Spencer Tracy. Pollak ranks it among the best notes anyone ever gave him.
The two went on to make “The Whole Nine Yards,” its sequel “The Whole Ten Yards” and “Hostage” together. Pollak spent time at the Idaho compound, where Willis and Moore, by then divorced, kept giant homes across the street from one another so their children would not have far to go. On set, Pollak said, Willis had no usual star entourage; his base camp was staffed by lifelong friends, among them a right-hand man who once tended bar with him in New York and holds the job to this day.
Ben Affleck, recalling advice Willis once gave him, said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Willis once turned to him and said his voice was too high. He said of Willis: “[He’s] he sweetest guy in the world. I love Bruce, and he really was giving me a tip.”
The Daughter Who Keeps Holding On
Tallulah Willis, 32, the youngest of Willis and Moore’s three daughters, posted an Instagram photo on Monday, Sept. 28, kissing her father on the forehead and gently holding his head. Her caption read: “So cute! 😚😚.”
The photo came about seven weeks after her Aug. 8 wedding to musician Justin Acee at the family’s property in Hailey, Idaho, where her father took part. The couple had dated since 2023 and announced their engagement in December 2024. Andrew Garfield, Lucy Liu, Ali Larter and designer Zac Posen were on the guest list.
Wedding photos show Tallulah resting her head on her father’s shoulder, his arm around her, with Acee beside them holding Bruce Willis’ hand. Moore posted a new set of the pictures on Instagram, writing: “Still reminiscing on the beautiful day that was my baby @buuski’s wedding to @justinacee.” Tallulah told Vogue after the wedding: “I am overwhelmed with gratitude and delight to begin this next chapter.”
She had shared similar glimpses before, posting in June 2025 holding her father’s hand and embracing him during a family visit, and earlier that month sitting on the floor with her arms around his legs as he sat on a couch. Her 2023 essay for Vogue documented their time together for the day he would no longer be there to remind her of it.
Still Very Present With the Family
Willis lives apart from his family and receives full-time care from specialists, an arrangement his wife regularly defends from trolls online. In a September interview she said he remains very present with the family, and that moments of connection and joy keep coming despite his dementia.
On Oct. 1, during World FTD Awareness Week, she posted another photo of him. His diagnosis continues to drive her advocacy, which she intends for other families and caregivers living with the disease.
Emma Heming Willis told Town & Country what she has told the couple’s daughters about the condition: “But this disease is chronic, progressive, and terminal. There is no cure.” She added that she does not discuss the terminal side with them, though “they know that Daddy’s not going to get better.”
Over the weekend she took the couple’s eldest daughter, Mabel Ray, 14, to Jay-Z’s concert at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, posting photos and video to Instagram with the caption “Mother-daughter date night. Jay-Z edition.”
