Jim Thornton, the longtime announcer of “Wheel of Fortune,” is out at Sony Pictures Television. Law enforcement met an American Airlines flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on May 14, 2026, and the allegations tied to that flight prompted the studio to suspend him and recast the role while it examined them; on Friday, September 4 it terminated his employment. Thornton, 61, has not been arrested or charged, and his attorney denies any wrongdoing on his part.
The studio’s September 1 statement did not detail what the allegations involve. “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton,” Sony said. “He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.” At that point the announcer had been sidelined, not dismissed.
A customer on board raised concerns, and officers met Flight 1276 on its arrival at LAX on May 14, American Airlines confirmed. The carrier gave no route; the plane had reportedly flown from Charlotte, N.C.
What One Passenger Says She Saw Onboard
Thornton’s laptop screen was showing messages and images from a chatroom she believed was used by pedophiles, according to a woman seated on the flight. One message, she said, referred to “CP,” which she understood as shorthand for illegal material involving children. When officers questioned him, Thornton was wearing a “Wheel of Fortune” jacket.
A flight attendant heard from the woman, who handed the crew photos of what she said she had witnessed. Authorities were notified by the captain, and officers were waiting at the gate. They questioned Thornton once the plane landed and released him; he was not taken into custody. LAX falls under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles Airport Police, not the Los Angeles Police Department, and no law enforcement agency has publicly confirmed that a criminal investigation is open. Sony’s internal inquiry is the only investigation anyone has confirmed.
His Attorney Denies Any Wrongdoing
His attorney, Allison Hart, has supplied every account of his side, because Thornton has not spoken publicly. She says her client broke no laws, was never arrested, and faces no criminal charges. Officers spoke with him for no more than five minutes after the plane landed, found no wrongdoing, and told him he was free to go, by her account. “In short, my client did nothing wrong,” Hart told TMZ. Thornton also deleted his social media following the firing, according to a report published September 9.
Hart also took up the question of why Thornton was in an online chatroom at all. A close family member died by suicide two years ago, she said, and he became an advocate for suicide prevention afterward. Support forums for people struggling with suicidal thoughts took up his time, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and its chat service among them.
“Through an acquaintance in the suicide prevention space, my client was misdirected to a forum with a similar URL,” Hart said, describing a site aimed at people with pedophilic thoughts that has no connection to the hotline. She said he left as soon as he understood what it was. Timestamps visible in the passenger’s photographs, which TMZ obtained, appeared to place him in the room for at least 57 minutes, the outlet reported. TMZ arrived at that reading itself; nobody has reported a forensic examination, and no law enforcement agency has corroborated it.
The site itself is not unlawful, Hart further said, and Thornton has never viewed, downloaded or consumed illegal material involving children — not on that flight and not at any other time.
The forum’s operators have since made their own case, and it does not sit comfortably beside Hart’s account. Their statement of September 8 denied that the site housed criminal activity and said it exists “precisely because the world is so incredibly hateful and punitive that minor-attracted people have no other means of support,” adding that there is “a severe risk of being reported to authorities simply for disclosing one’s feelings.” In further detail reported September 9, the operators said the site “operates a support chat room for people attracted to children and adolescents” and maintains “strict rules against any kind of illicit behavior, including the sharing of criminalized images.” They added, “Those who violate the rules are swiftly banned and their messages removed as soon as possible.”
How Thornton Reached the Announcer Booth
A West Virginia native, Thornton has worked since the mid-1980s as a radio and television announcer, voice actor and news anchor. He first turned up on “Wheel of Fortune” as a guest announcer in 2010 following the death of Charlie O’Donnell, then took over the role permanently in 2011. He has announced “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” since 2021 as well, and earlier voiced episodes of the CBS mainstay “The Price Is Right.” His credits also include the film “Monsters, Inc.,” the video games “Wall-E” and “Mafia II,” and “Jeopardy!,” according to a report published September 10.
Accounts of his radio career do not line up. A news release put out by CBS in 2011 had him delivering traffic reports at KNX in Los Angeles since 1985; other reference sources date his arrival at the station to 1996. The Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Award often attached to his name trace back to that same release and nowhere else.
Millions of viewers hear him weekly, yet hosts Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White have the far more recognizable faces. Sony Pictures Television produces “Wheel of Fortune” along with “Jeopardy!,” and no other syndicated game shows in the country are bigger than those two. The show drew 8,124,000 viewers in the ratings week ending January 4 and ranked second in syndication.
The screen is already absorbing the fallout. Producers had taped the first month of the new season and are re-editing those episodes with another announcer ahead of the September 14 premiere, an effort one anonymous source described to TMZ as a “major undertaking.” An interim announcer has re-recorded Thornton’s portions for the upcoming episodes, and as of September 9 no permanent replacement had been announced. Thornton still turned up on a rerun that aired Tuesday, September 1, after the investigation began. Sony announced the outcome three days later: “Following a thorough investigation, Jim Thornton’s employment with Wheel of Fortune has been terminated, effective immediately,” a company spokesperson said.
At a taping on September 8, nobody introduced Seacrest and White at all. On September 10 the question of who would occupy the booth when the season opens was still unresolved.
An insider told Closer magazine that Seacrest could leave the show. “It’s going to be very difficult for Sony to put the focus back on the episodes they’ve been pumping out when Jim’s exit is so fresh in everybody’s minds, and Ryan is somebody who is particularly allergic to any kind of scandal and innuendo,” the source said, in a report published September 12. Seacrest has made no public statement about the Thornton matter.
Marshall University, Thornton’s alma mater, has pulled references to him from its own website, including pages identifying him as its 2026 spring commencement speaker; a Homecoming Grand Marshal page on the separate alumni foundation domain remained live. The show airs on local television stations and streams on Peacock and Hulu.
