Jim Thornton, the longtime announcer of “Wheel of Fortune,” is out at Sony Pictures Television. Law enforcement met an American Airlines flight at Los Angeles International Airport on May 14, 2026, and the allegations tied to that flight prompted the studio to suspend him and recast the role while it investigated; on Friday, September 4, it terminated his employment. Thornton, 61, has not been arrested or charged, and his attorney denies any wrongdoing on his part.
The studio’s September 1 statement did not say what the allegations involve. “We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton,” Sony said. “He has been suspended from ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.” Three days later a spokesperson confirmed the outcome: “Following a thorough investigation, Jim Thornton’s employment with ‘Wheel of Fortune’ has been terminated, effective immediately.”
A customer on board raised concerns, and officers met Flight 1276 on its arrival, American Airlines said in a statement that did not give the route. The plane had reportedly flown from Charlotte, N.C.
What One Passenger Says She Saw Onboard
Thornton’s laptop screen was showing messages and images from a chat room she believed was used by pedophiles, according to a woman seated on the flight. One message, she said, referred to “CP,” which she understood as shorthand for illegal material involving children (child pornography). She photographed the screen, told a flight attendant and handed the crew the pictures; the captain notified authorities, and officers were waiting at the gate. Thornton was wearing a jacket embroidered with the show’s logo when they questioned him.
They released him without taking him into custody. No outlet has identified which agency met the plane, and none has publicly confirmed that a criminal investigation is open. Sony’s internal inquiry is the only investigation anyone has confirmed.
His Attorney Denies Any Wrongdoing
His attorney, Allison Hart, has supplied every account of his side, because Thornton has not spoken publicly. Officers “spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and told my client he was free to go,” she said in a statement. “In short, my client did nothing wrong.” He has never viewed, downloaded or consumed illegal material involving children, she added.
Hart also took up the question of why Thornton was in an online chat room at all. A close family member died by suicide two years ago, she said, and he took up suicide-prevention work afterward, spending time in support forums. “Through an acquaintance in the suicide prevention space, my client was misdirected to a forum with a similar URL,” she said, describing a site aimed at people with pedophilic thoughts and unconnected to the national crisis line. He left, she said, as soon as he understood what it was.
That account sits awkwardly beside one figure in the coverage. Timestamps in the passenger’s photographs appeared to place him in the room for at least 57 minutes, TMZ reported. The reading is the outlet’s own; no forensic examination has been reported and no agency has corroborated it. The forum’s operators, a group called LifeLine, issued a statement on September 8 denying that criminal activity takes place on the site. TMZ reported the same day that the chat room had been shut down.
How Thornton Reached the Announcer Booth
Thornton grew up in Huntington, W.Va., and got his start in radio at WMUL-FM while attending Marshall University. He left for Los Angeles without finishing his degree and joined KNX 1070 Newsradio in 1985. He guest-announced the game show in late December 2010, two months after the death of its longtime voice, Charlie O’Donnell, and was confirmed as permanent announcer on June 13, 2011. He has also announced ABC’s “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” since its January 2021 premiere.
His voice-over credits include Disney’s “Monsters, Inc.” and its theme-park ride and the video games “WALL-E” and “Mafia II.” He was one of several announcers given a try-out to replace Rod Roddy on “The Price Is Right” in 2004, and did not get the job. The Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Award attached to his name trace to a single 2011 CBS news release, with no award, category or year named; Murrow Awards go to news organizations, not individuals.
Millions hear him weekly, yet hosts Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White have the far more recognizable faces. Sony Pictures Television produces “Wheel of Fortune” along with “Jeopardy!,” the two biggest syndicated game shows in the country. In the ratings week ending January 4, “Wheel” drew 8,124,000 viewers and ranked second across all syndication, behind only ESPN’s NFL coverage; “Jeopardy!” was third at 8,009,000.
The Season Opened Without Him
Thornton had taped roughly a month of Season 44 before the suspension, and producers set about re-editing those episodes with a replacement voice — an effort a source described to TMZ as a “major undertaking.” A rerun carrying his voice still aired on Tuesday, September 1, the day the suspension was announced. At a taping at the Sony lot on September 8, nobody introduced Seacrest and White at all.
When Season 44 premiered on Monday, September 14, an unidentified male voice introduced the hosts. Sony has not said whose it is, no permanent replacement has been named, and some viewers have speculated online that the voice is synthetic — a theory the studio has not addressed.
Closer Weekly reported on September 10 that executives were worried about Seacrest, quoting an unnamed source: “Ryan doesn’t need these kinds of bad vibes when he’s still deciding how much more time he wants to devote to this job.” Neither Seacrest nor White has said anything publicly about the Thornton matter.
Thornton’s Facebook page went dark the evening of the firing; TMZ did not establish who took it down. Marshall University has pulled references to him from its own site, including pages naming him its 2026 spring commencement speaker, though a page listing him as a 2025 homecoming grand marshal remains live on the separate alumni foundation domain.
