Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, had been warning about artificial intelligence for roughly seven minutes at the Clinton Global Initiative 2026 Annual Meeting in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, when a teleprompter failure forced him off the stage.
The malfunction struck just as Harry, 42, was mid-argument criticizing Big Tech during the summit’s “Getting Disruption Right” session. It took 40 minutes before he could return and finish his remarks.
When he returned to finish, he joked about the irony of the malfunction. “Hello again,” he said. “So AI got into my speech, so I was asked to come out and finish it. Interesting to see what it was so concerned about in part two.”
A Warning Built Around Children

Harry built his remarks around children and the pace of technological change. Emotional attachment, not merely screen time, is what the AI products of today are engineered to pursue, he argued, and the pace of the technology has already outstripped the ability of researchers, parents and regulators to keep up with it. Systems now being deployed want to become more than a tool, he said — they want to become the confidant.
“Social media learned how to capture our attention,” he told the audience. “AI is learning how to enter our relationships.”
He said the goal of the tech giants building today’s AI systems is to “find you, hook you, exploit you, break and then blame you.”
Harry said the damage from the last wave of “recklessly built technology” has already landed on a generation of children and parents. He is the father of Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, and he framed his concern through that lens throughout.
Before the glitch cut him off, he said: “I come to this as a father, one who has shared countless conversations with other parents as they mourned the loss of their children to recklessly built technology.”
Parents’ Network Two Years On
The Parents’ Network, an Archewell initiative, launched from that same Clinton Global Initiative stage two years earlier, he recalled. He and Meghan Markle had started it after meeting families whose children died by suicide or were seriously harmed following experiences on social media.
The bereaved parents he had counted in the hundreds in 2024 now number in the thousands, he said, and millions of families are living with the fallout of a digital boom that outran efforts to protect young people. After the tech cooperated, he pushed his message to the finish.
Family Rift Still Unresolved
Harry had moved his family back to the United Kingdom in August for an “extended period,” and the New York trip followed weeks later. The couple are living outside London with Archie and Lilibet, and Meghan and Harry will not resume duties as working royals.
Reports on the family’s reception of the homecoming genuinely conflict with one another. By some accounts, King Charles has declined to meet his son, wary of being seen alongside Harry’s ongoing legal battle against British tabloid publishers; other reporting describes a private family visit over the summer. That legal battle includes a case against the Daily Mail’s publisher, Associated Newspapers.
Outlets consistently report that the broader estrangement remains unresolved. It deepened after the 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview, the 2022 Netflix docuseries and Harry’s 2023 memoir, “Spare.” Reconciliation has drawn little appetite from Prince William, outlets also agree, in the years since Harry and Meghan gave up their working royal roles in 2020 and moved to California.
In February 2024, Harry rushed to London after his father’s cancer diagnosis became public; the visit was short, and the two met only briefly. Later, in May 2024, he returned for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, but a royal representative said the king was too busy to see him and noted that Harry understood the demands on his father’s schedule.
