An inquest has heard that 14-year-old Lilly Jones died from multiple stab wounds after her body was discovered in a park in Blaina, Wales, leading to a murder charge against a boy of the same age who appeared in court.
The body of Lilly Jones was found on June 22 in the Duffryn Park area of Blaina, two days after she was last spotted on High Street in the South Wales town at around 6:50 pm on June 20. Gwent Police completed formal identification of the teenager on June 30, more than a week after officers cordoned off sections of nearby Pilgrims Park, which borders the A467.
Trial Set for November
A 14-year-old boy from the Blaenau Gwent area of southeast Wales stood before Cardiff Crown Court on Monday facing a murder charge in connection with Lilly’s death. The youth, previously described by authorities as “white British,” did not enter a plea and was remanded into custody by Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, the Recorder of Cardiff, who scheduled a trial to begin November 23 with proceedings due to last four weeks.
Legal protections for juveniles in criminal proceedings prohibit the identification of the defendant. Gwent Police have emphasized that this restriction applies to social media users, warning that violations could result in serious legal consequences and potentially damage the integrity of the trial.
Warning Against Social Media Posts
Detective Chief Inspector Steven Thomas, who is leading the investigation, issued a statement urging the public to avoid jeopardizing the pursuit of justice through online commentary. Thomas said it was essential that the public reflect on how their words, particularly remarks posted on the internet, might compromise the possibility of securing a conviction against any individual determined to have broken the law.
The senior officer said his thoughts remained with Lilly’s family and friends during this difficult time, and that her family continues to be supported by specialist officers. Thomas also thanked residents of Blaina for their cooperation, noting that officers had been conducting inquiries in the community for more than a week since the discovery and that local residents had shown consistent support throughout the investigation.
School Remembers Student’s Warmth
Lilly was a student at Brynmawr Foundation School, where head teacher Gerard McNamara remembered her as someone whose kindness and bubbly personality touched all who knew her. McNamara said she was a valued member of the school community and that the grief over her death would resonate deeply among pupils, teachers, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
The head teacher said the school’s thoughts and heartfelt condolences were extended to those closest to her as they navigate this extraordinarily painful period, and that the institution stands ready to offer support. Counseling and other resources have been made available to pupils and staff who have been impacted by Lilly’s death, McNamara said, with the school working closely with relevant agencies to ensure support is accessible to all those affected.
Investigation Remains Active
Officers maintained a visible presence in the area following the discovery, conducting house-to-house inquiries and gathering evidence while forensic teams completed their work at the scene. Parts of Pilgrims Park remained cordoned off for several days after the body was found.
The distance between where Lilly was last seen on High Street and the location where her body was discovered is relatively short. Authorities have not disclosed details about the timeline between her disappearance on the evening of June 20 and the discovery on June 22, though such information may emerge during the trial scheduled for November.
Thomas reiterated that the investigation remains active and asked that residents continue to come forward with any information that might assist the inquiry. With the accused now remanded into custody and a trial scheduled to run through late November and potentially into late December, Lilly’s family, friends, and the wider community face months of waiting as they seek answers about what happened to the teenager known for her warmth and bubbly personality.
