Authorities in rural Victoria, Australia, have arrested and charged a 16-year-old boy with murder in the death of 13-year-old Layla Jeffery, whose body was discovered on Thursday, July 9, days after she was reported missing. The discovery ended a search that began when a family member reported her missing on July 5, 2026.
Victoria Police confirmed the charge on Saturday, July 11, in a statement issued at 5:03 p.m. The boy, from the Swan Hill area, was expected to appear before a children’s court that afternoon for a remand hearing. His name is being withheld by authorities, and it remains unclear whether he has entered a plea to the charge.
Detective Inspector Dave Dunstan of the Missing Persons Squad said investigators executed a search warrant at a residence in Donald around 11 a.m. Friday, where the arrest was made.
“At this location, we’ve arrested a 16-year-old youth,” Dunstan told reporters in Donald that afternoon. He added that a 53-year-old woman from Donald and a 55-year-old woman from Melbourne were assisting officers with their inquiries.
Dunstan said the teenage boy was known to both Jeffery and to police. Investigators have confirmed that the accused and the victim knew one another but have not elaborated on the nature of their relationship. As of Monday, police had not disclosed her cause of death.
Discovery in the Bushland
Jeffery was last seen on McCracken Avenue in Donald on Saturday, July 4. A large-scale operation involving local officers, the dog squad, the air wing and the search and rescue squad combed bushland west of Byrne Street in the days that followed. Late on Thursday afternoon, that search led investigators to a body in the small town in the state’s rural west. The remains were later identified as Jeffery.
Town Reeling From Loss
Donald, a town of roughly 1,500 people, has been left shaken by the tragedy. Residents gathered in the wake of the discovery, struggling to absorb news that has deeply affected the tight-knit community in regional Victoria.
Donald resident Peta Edmonds described a town in mourning. “Our hearts are broken, and our entire community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of beautiful Layla,” she wrote on Facebook.
Jeffery’s aunt, Kaitlyn Cheyne, remembered her as a “very sweet and fairly shy girl.” Cheyne said that the family was devastated and struggling to cope with Jeffery’s loss, particularly given the tragic nature of her death.
Community Support Flows In
A GoFundMe campaign established to help Jeffery’s family with memorial expenses and other costs had raised more than 44,000 Australian dollars, a measure of the outpouring of support in the days since her death was confirmed. Donations have continued to flow in from across the region and beyond as word of the case has spread. The fundraiser, created in the wake of the tragedy, reflects the breadth of concern and solidarity that has emerged from the wider community beyond Donald’s borders.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not indicated whether additional charges may follow. For now, the identity of the accused remains shielded under laws governing minors, and the case is set to proceed through the children’s court system. The two women assisting police had not been charged as of the most recent statement from investigators.
