Popular Actor Passes Away at 74

Mike Stone, the older brother of Oscar-nominated actress Sharon Stone, has died at 74 after battling a prolonged illness. The actress revealed the death on May 13, 2026, in an Instagram post that included a photo of her eldest sibling.

“Mike Stone, my oldest brother,” the 68-year-old “Casino” star wrote in her tribute. “Has passed away. Following an extended illness. We wish him peace.”

The message bore signatures from Sharon and her three sons — Roan Joseph Bronstein Stone, 25, Laird Vonne Stone, 21, and Quinn Kelly Stone, 19 — reflecting how deeply the loss has affected the entire family.

An Actor Who Shunned the Spotlight

Though Mike Stone pursued acting like his famous sister, he kept a low profile throughout his career. His résumé included a role in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1996 action film “Eraser,” as well as appearances in the horror movie “Malevolence” and three episodes of daytime soap “The Bold and the Beautiful.”

His most recent credit came in 2022 with the film “Destinos Opostos,” showing he remained involved in the industry into later years. But his most significant on-screen work may have been alongside Sharon herself in Sam Raimi’s 1995 western “The Quick and the Dead,” which co-starred Gene Hackman and has since gained a cult following among genre enthusiasts. The film remains a cherished part of the Stone family’s shared Hollywood history.

Mike maintained a steady presence in his sister’s life despite his preference for staying behind the scenes, offering a private contrast to her worldwide celebrity.

A Family Marked by Repeated Tragedy

The Stone family has endured a devastating series of losses in recent years. Sharon’s younger brother Patrick Stone died of a heart attack in 2023 at just 57 years old. That tragedy followed another unbearable loss: Patrick’s infant son River, whom he shared with wife Tasha Stone, died of organ failure in August 2021 at only 11 months old.

The family’s matriarch, Dorothy Marie Stone, passed away on March 26, 2025, at 91, adding another layer of grief within a short span of years. After Patrick’s death, Sharon acknowledged the cumulative pain, telling supporters, “Yes, we’ve had a tremendous amount of loss in these last couple of years, as so many of you also have.” She encouraged people to “continue to be kind,” a message she has emphasized repeatedly since.

Hollywood Friends Rally Around Sharon

Following the first reported news on the evening of May 13, fellow actors quickly expressed their condolences. Cary Elwes of “The Princess Bride” commented, “Sorry for your loss, Sharon,” while “Younger” actress Debi Mazar wrote, “My condolences Sharon.”

The flood of sympathy messages in the comments section reflected both the affection Sharon commands within Hollywood and awareness of the extraordinary amount of heartache her family has endured.

Sharon’s Resilience in the Face of Loss

The actress has been forthright about her own health challenges, including a near-fatal brain hemorrhage in 2001 that dramatically altered her outlook on life and family. She has since devoted considerable energy to painting, advocacy work and philanthropy, while continuing to accept selected acting projects.

Her willingness to speak openly about grief and hardship has resonated with fans and followers facing similar struggles, earning praise for helping others feel less isolated in their own pain.

Sharon’s brief Instagram tribute wishing her brother peace serves as the family’s public farewell to a man who, despite his Hollywood ties, spent most of his life away from the spotlight. Mike Stone is survived by his sisters Sharon and Kelly, along with multiple nieces and nephews, including Sharon’s three sons who joined their mother in saying goodbye to their uncle.
