Mass School Shooting: 10 Dead, and 12 Injured

A tragic school shooting that killed 10 people at a middle school in southern Turkey has ignited national discussions about firearm regulations and internet platform oversight, representing the deadliest incident of its kind the country has experienced.

On April 15, 2026, at roughly 1:30 p.m. local time, 14-year-old student İsa Aras Mersinli, who attended Ayser Çalık Middle School in Kahramanmaraş’s Onikişubat district, discharged firearms at his peers and educators. The student brought five 9mm handguns and seven ammunition cartridges to campus, all belonging to his parent, a police chief inspector, hidden within his bag.

The incident started when Mersinli entered one classroom and fired at students and staff before proceeding to another classroom. One of those who perished was 55-year-old instructor Ayla Kara, who lost her life protecting her pupils from the gunfire. Eight pupils also died in the initial assault.

The deceased have been named as Mustafa Aslan, Şuranur Sevgi Kazıcı, Zeynep Kılınç, Furkan Sancak Balal, Bayram Nabi Şişik, Belinay Nur Boyraz (or Poyraz), Adnan Göktürk Yeşil, Kerem Erdem Güngör, and Yusuf Tarık Gül. A tenth individual died from injuries sustained during medical care the following day, raising the death toll to 10. At least 12 additional individuals sustained injuries, with six initially considered to be in serious condition.

Disturbing video material released following the event depicts pupils leaping from ground-level windows of the building while weapon discharge sounds reverberate across the property. Roughly 15 discharge sounds are audible in a roughly 90-second clip. Additional recordings document students racing through open grounds while concerned guardians hurried toward the facility.

The incident concluded when two school personnel immobilized the shooter in a passageway. After Mersinli managed to escape, Necmettin Bekçi, the father of two children at the institution, cut the young person’s upper leg with a blade to disable him, inadvertently damaging a major leg artery. Mersinli succumbed to hemorrhaging at the location.

His parent, Uğur Mersinli, was apprehended the next day and moved to Elazığ Prison, confronting potential charges of reckless conduct and neglecting to safeguard weapons. On April 21, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that the perpetrator’s mother, Pınar Peyman Mersinli, had also been arrested.

Authorities uncovered disturbing information regarding the perpetrator’s digital behavior and psychological condition. Turkish law enforcement found that Mersinli’s WhatsApp picture showed Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old responsible for killing six individuals close to the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2014. “Preliminary investigation results demonstrated that the offender displayed an image on his WhatsApp account referencing Elliot Rodger, who perpetrated an incident in the United States in 2014,” law enforcement officials reported.

Academic administrators had previously identified Mersinli as a “difficult pupil” who had undergone mental health evaluations over recent weeks. A school psychologist disclosed that the young person had issues with device overuse and school participation. “We maintained regular interaction with his guardians. He experienced device dependency. He was reluctant to participate in classes. Even when present, he sought to depart,” the psychologist stated.

A written declaration supposedly authored by Mersinli later appeared publicly, distributed by someone asserting to be his internet companion from Argentina. The composition, which included offensive language that was redacted before sharing, outlined intentions for “something significant.” Authorities are examining technological materials obtained from the perpetrator’s residence and his parents’ automobile.

The catastrophe happened merely 27 hours following another school shooting in Turkey’s Şanlıurfa area, where a previous attendee discharged a long gun at a technical secondary institution in the Siverek area, harming 16 individuals. The perpetrator subsequently ended his own existence. By April 17, 20 individuals had been arrested regarding the Şanlıurfa incident.

Before these incidents, such incidents were uncommon in Turkey, making the sequential occurrences especially distressing for the populace. The Turkish leadership reacted expeditiously, with the interior and education departments conducting a combined meeting regarding security in Ankara on April 17. The gathering included both department heads, all 81 of Turkey’s regional governors, law enforcement directors, and regional education officials.

On April 21, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey approved a motion to establish a parliamentary committee to investigate both school shootings, as well as the risks posed to children by digital environments. Justice Minister Gürlek also announced plans to amend Turkey’s firearms law to expand parental responsibility and increase penalties for serious violent crimes involving children.

In the days following the shooting, Turkish law enforcement conducted an extensive effort to monitor internet communications. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek revealed that 67 internet users were apprehended for communications focused on 54 distinct educational institutions. In a separate action, law enforcement ordered the detention of 79 individuals charged with promoting criminal behavior and perpetrators in remarks regarding the two incidents.

The Ministry of Household and Societal Assistance formed a dedicated unit to deliver emotional and psychological help to impacted pupils and their guardians. Educational institutions in Kahramanmaraş remained closed for 48 hours subsequent to the occurrence as the region grieved. On April 19, the Ministry of National Education removed Erhan Baydur from his position as Kahramanmaraş Provincial Director of National Education.

Memorial services for eight of the deceased took place during the afternoon of April 16, bringing together thousands of bereaved relatives and area occupants. Cevdet Yesil, the parent of victim Adnan Göktürk Yeşil, recounted the excruciating period spent attempting to locate his child before learning of his passing at the medical facility.

The relative of victim Şuranur Sevgi Kazıcı, discovered her 10-year-old relative’s passing when the youngster’s designation was broadcast on television. A further casualty, Zeynep Kılınç, was honored by her sibling, Mahmut, as an intelligent girl who treated people with respect.

Thousands of school personnel congregated in Ankara and Izmir, advocating for stronger institutional safety procedures, as the nation struggles to stop similar occurrences. Law enforcement has declared that, per preliminary investigation conclusions, no connection to extremist movements has been identified, characterizing the incident as a singular occurrence.
