Elton John’s Husband Offers Fans Health Update

David Furnish shared a comforting update about husband Elton John’s condition this week, telling Variety the music legend is “battling on” despite persistent vision issues that have troubled the 78-year-old singer over the past year.

Speaking before the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Furnish described a contented home life for the EGOT winner, who has stepped away from touring to concentrate on family.

Furnish reported that John is holding up well, continuing to fight, and staying active and attentive at home with their sons — the reason he ended his touring career.

Furnish and John are parents to two sons: Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13. Since John wrapped up his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in July 2023, the family has kept a relatively low profile, swapping packed arenas for quieter life near Windsor Castle.

The “Rocket Man” has been open about his mounting health problems in recent years. In July 2024, he lost sight in his right eye after a severe infection contracted while on holiday in the south of France. On Good Morning America that November, he disclosed the severity of his condition: four months without vision in his right eye and reduced sight in his left.

The eyesight issues add to a string of medical setbacks for the iconic performer. At the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” he humorously listed his operations, noting surgeries on his knees, right hip, prostate, appendix, and tonsils.

“To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left,” John joked. “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip.”

In 2021, John experienced a painful fall that forced him to postpone parts of his farewell tour. He later had hip surgery and underwent intensive physiotherapy to regain full mobility and return to performing.

Despite these obstacles, John remains actively involved in his charitable efforts. The annual Academy Awards viewing party, now in its 34th year, raises money for HIV/AIDS research and advocacy through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised over £300 million since 1992.

This year’s reception will be co-hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka. Grammy winner Lola Young will perform, and the guest list includes a star-studded lineup featuring Dua Lipa, Donatella Versace, Keke Palmer, Quinta Brunson, Jon Batiste, Nikki Glaser, Adam Lambert, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Ritter, and Sharon Stone.

Furnish voiced confidence about this year’s fundraising ambitions, aiming to exceed $9 million for the foundation. He noted that last year was especially difficult after the catastrophic Los Angeles fires in January 2025, which killed at least 31 people and destroyed more than 18,000 structures across Pacific Palisades and Altadena, creating widespread competing needs for aid in Southern California.

Ticket demand is high this year, Furnish added, and the evening will showcase a special artwork by Irish painter Jack Coulter. The artist painted live as John played “Tiny Dancer” on piano — a unique collaboration that will be auctioned during the event.

John and Furnish were seen together at Donatella Versace’s New Year’s Eve party in 2025 with Zachary and Elijah. The rare outing highlighted the family’s effort to stay connected amid John’s continuing health issues.

Although John has stepped away from touring, Furnish’s comments suggest the singer has found calm in this phase of life. He is prioritizing family time while continuing to champion the causes central to his legacy beyond music. For fans worried about the beloved artist, Furnish’s remarks provide reassurance: John is in good spirits, surrounded by love, and staying engaged despite his physical limitations.
