11 Fatalities in Football Game Mass Shooting

On January 25, 2026, armed attackers descended upon a soccer field in Salamanca, Guanajuato state, Mexico, killing 11 individuals and injuring another 12 post-match. The assailants arrived in multiple vehicles and executed at least 100 shots aimed at families lingering after the game to socialize.

Of the casualties, ten individuals were pronounced dead at the Cabañas pitch located in the Loma de Flores neighborhood. The eleventh victim succumbed to their injuries later at a local medical facility. Among the injured were a woman and a minor.

The Mayor of Salamanca, César Prieto, stated that the attackers made their appearance at the conclusion of the soccer match. “Unfortunately, there are criminal groups trying to subjugate authorities, something they are not going to achieve,” Prieto remarked. He urged President Claudia Sheinbaum for assistance while addressing the ongoing crime spree plaguing the city.

As of now, the motive behind this deadly shooting remains uncertain. An inquiry into the matter has been initiated, and security forces have been dispatched to the location. President Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico’s security cabinet is coordinating with state and federal authorities to investigate and strengthen security in the region. As of late January 2026, three suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack following operations by state security forces. This incident follows closely on the heels of the killing of five men in the same city, just a day prior.

The city of Salamanca, situated in the heart of Mexico, continues to grapple with increasing violence linked to organized crime. Guanajuato state, home to Salamanca, reported the most murders in the country last year.

The region is currently a battleground for two major criminal syndicates – the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Cartel de Santa Rosa de Lima, also known as the Santa Rosa de Lima gang. Both groups are involved in oil and fuel theft, drug trafficking, and extortion throughout the state.

Salamanca houses a significant Pemex refinery, making it a key location for criminal factions involved in fuel theft.

The United States has taken stringent measures against both cartels. President Donald Trump designated the Jalisco New Generation Cartel as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

In response to the U.S. crackdown, Mexican authorities surrendered 37 high-impact suspects to the United States. U.S. forces have launched more than 30 strikes against vessels allegedly involved in drug trafficking, resulting in more than 100 casualties.

Despite the rising violence, the Mexican government’s data indicates that the nation’s murder rate in 2025 was 17.5 per 100,000 citizens, which officials claim is the lowest since 2016.

The recent trend of targeting civilians at community gatherings like soccer matches signifies a disturbing escalation in cartel violence.

Soccer fields and other recreational spots were traditionally seen as safe community meeting points in Mexican towns and cities. The Salamanca attack shattered this sense of security, impacting families during a leisurely activity that typically unites neighborhoods.
