A Nigerian news anchor died on September 29 after jumping three stories from her apartment building while attempting to escape armed robbers who had broken into her residence in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, 29, was found unconscious outside her building at Unique Apartments in the Katampe area following the attack on Monday morning. She was rushed to Maitama District Hospital where she later died from the injuries sustained in the fall.
The Arise News anchor and producer had been living on the top floor of the three-story twin building complex that houses 18 residential units. Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police Ajao Adewale confirmed that armed robbers specifically targeted the building during the early morning hours.
According to police reports, the attackers shot and killed one of two private security guards who attempted to challenge them before gaining access to the building. Commissioner Adewale explained that the panic created by the violent break-in led Maduagwu to make the desperate decision to jump from her third-floor apartment.
Adewale described the incident as a cruel and senseless act that has no place in a sane society. He noted that “out of fear, she jumped down from that third story” and expressed sadness over the unfortunate outcome.
The police commissioner immediately launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. Law enforcement has deployed intelligence and operational assets to identify, track, and apprehend those responsible for what authorities are calling a heinous crime.
Arise News management released an official statement announcing Maduagwu’s death, describing her as a cherished member of their news family and a vibrant voice who engaged and connected with viewers. The network noted that, beyond her broadcasting career, Maduagwu was also a trained lawyer who served as a professional and supportive colleague to many.
The news organization expressed shock over the loss and called for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of those responsible for the crime. They indicated that while Maduagwu’s voice has been silenced, her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of their collective memory.
Several high-profile Nigerian officials have responded to the tragedy. Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, expressed shock and deep sadness over the news. He joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s call for security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure the perpetrators face justice.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah condemned the incident and described Maduagwu’s death as a heavy loss to both her employer and the entire Nigerian media industry. The governor noted that at 29, she had already established herself in the nation’s media landscape as a consummate professional who reached millions of viewers with her delivery.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani also mourned the loss in a letter to Arise News chairman Prince Nduka Obaigbena, describing the killing as not only a blow to her family and colleagues but a national tragedy. He characterized the incident as an act of cowardice and unprovoked violence that cut short a promising life filled with purpose and brilliance.
Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris called the killing regrettable and a grievous loss to the Nigerian media fraternity and the nation. He confirmed that federal authorities condemn the circumstances surrounding her death and that security agencies are fully engaged in the investigation.
Before joining Arise News, Maduagwu studied law in the United Kingdom and returned to Nigeria to complete national service. She worked as a legal executive and junior counsel before transitioning into broadcast journalism, where she covered women’s rights, legal affairs and gender equality issues.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, viewers and members of the public who remember Maduagwu for her professionalism and dedication to journalism. A memorial website has been established where friends and admirers can share condolences and memories of the news anchor.
As of October 9, 2025, police announced the arrest of 12 suspects. According to Adewale, the arrests followed a coordinated intelligence-led operation. Authorities stated that the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation as the investigation continues.
