President Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron Trump, has relocated from New York University’s Manhattan campus to the university’s Washington, D.C. location for his sophomore year. The 19-year-old first son made the transfer after completing his freshman year at NYU’s main Greenwich Village campus while residing at Trump Tower.
Sources confirmed to People that Barron is now attending classes at NYU’s D.C. campus, which sits just blocks from the White House. The move became apparent in early September when security guards at the New York campus confirmed he had not returned for the fall semester.
The Washington campus offers a dramatically different academic environment from NYU’s main location. While the Manhattan campus hosts approximately 29,060 undergraduate students, the D.C. branch accommodates only around 100 students per semester. The university’s website states that undergraduate students based in D.C. engage deeply with politics, policy, business, journalism, and leadership through coursework and experiential learning in the nation’s capital.
During his freshman year from fall 2024 to spring 2025, Barron commuted from Trump Tower in Manhattan to NYU’s Stern School of Business. He occasionally traveled to Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, to visit his father. The transition occurred against the backdrop of significant family events, including Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election and the family’s subsequent return to the White House following Inauguration Day on January 20, 2025.
The academic costs for Barron’s new arrangement total approximately $42,324 per semester. Tuition at the D.C. campus amounts to roughly $32,811, with housing fees potentially adding another $9,513. However, his exact living arrangements remain unclear, though first lady Melania Trump previously indicated that her son would always have a room available at the White House.
This living arrangement marks a return to familiar territory for Barron, who previously resided at the White House during his father’s first presidential term from 2017 to 2021. However, the family’s initial transition to Washington was delayed during the first Trump administration. Melania and Barron remained in New York for the first five months of Donald Trump’s presidency in 2017, allowing the then-11-year-old to complete his school year at Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School in Manhattan.
President Trump discussed his son’s academic interests during an August 2024 interview with Philadelphia’s Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, noting that “he does like politics. It’s sort of funny.” The president also described Barron as a good student who had shown genuine interest in political studies.
Barron’s college choice represented a departure from family academic traditions. Donald Trump and three of his older children attended and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, while Tiffany Trump studied at Georgetown University. The family’s only previous connection to NYU was through Jared Kushner, who earned dual degrees in business and law from the university after his undergraduate education at Harvard.
Following his high school graduation from Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach on May 17, 2024, Barron enrolled at NYU for fall 2024. During the graduation ceremony, his name was not announced over the loudspeaker, likely to avoid drawing additional attention. The ceremony occurred while his father was dealing with legal proceedings related to a hush-money case involving adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Sources close to the family indicate that Melania Trump maintains close oversight of her son’s activities and whereabouts. One source told People that “Melania watches Barron constantly in an effort to be sure nobody messes with him or bullies him, as this is a constant worry with her.” The same source noted that she always knows where he is and what he is doing.
Reports suggest that Barron spent the summer of 2025 actively working on his own financial interests and spending time with others involved in similar ventures. He reportedly launched a real estate company, Trump, Fulcher & Roxburgh Capital Inc., with former high school classmates. Sources indicate that dating is not currently a priority for him as he focuses on his education, family relationships, and developing business interests.
The White House and first lady’s office declined to comment on Barron’s current living and academic arrangements. NYU also declined to comment regarding the transfer.
