1 Dead, 9 Injured in Juneteenth Mass Shooting

Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred during a Juneteenth celebration in Anderson County, South Carolina, on June 21, leaving one woman dead and nine others injured. The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrests following an extensive investigation into the mass shooting incident.

The victim has been identified as Laporshia Janae Gray Cobb, a 35-year-old woman from Anderson and mother of three. Cobb died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to the Anderson County Coroner’s Office, which ruled the case a homicide. Nine other individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the incident, with one person reported in critical condition.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, during Anderson County’s sixth annual Juneteenth celebration along Scarborough Road near Anderson Regional Airport. Several hundred people had gathered throughout the day for the peaceful celebration when an argument erupted in the parking lot as more attendees arrived around 7 p.m.

Anderson County Sheriff Chuck McBride indicated that multiple shots were fired during the altercation, sending people scrambling throughout the area. When law enforcement arrived, they encountered a chaotic scene with hundreds of people fleeing and debris scattered across the roadway. More than 100 emergency personnel responded to the incident, including officers from multiple agencies and medical teams.

The first arrest was made on June 22, when deputies apprehended Tiyelle Rakelle Demon Hollings, 18, of Anderson. Hollings was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Investigators determined that Hollings was involved in the altercation and was one of the individuals who fired shots before fleeing the scene.

Two additional suspects were arrested on June 25 following continued investigation by detectives. Kamiryn Ty’Zierriun Goss, 18, and Keeayatas Shameski Geer, 19, both of Anderson, were each charged with murder and nine counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. Evidence and witness statements led investigators to identify Goss and Geer as additional suspects in the case.

During bond hearings, Magistrate Judge James White denied bond for Hollings on June 23. Bond hearings for Goss and Geer were scheduled for June 26 at the Anderson County Magistrate Courthouse. All three suspects are being held at the Anderson County Detention Center.

The injured victims received treatment at multiple medical facilities. Two individuals sustained severe injuries and were transported to AnMed Health and Prisma Health facilities. Seven others were treated at AnMed Health for gunshot wounds to their extremities. Several victims transported themselves to hospitals rather than waiting for emergency medical services.

The shooting occurred outside but within feet of a Veterans of Foreign Wars post, though the sheriff’s office clarified that the VFW post had no affiliation with the Juneteenth event. The celebration had remained peaceful throughout the day before the evening violence erupted.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Anderson Police Department, South Carolina Highway Patrol, Anderson County Fire Department, Anderson County EMS, Medshore Ambulance Service, and the Anderson County Office of the Coroner. The Criminal Investigations Division continues to work on the case.

Sheriff’s office officials noted that “detectives have tirelessly investigated this case to ensure these dangerous individuals are behind bars,” and indicated that additional charges remain possible as the investigation continues. Detectives spent considerable time at the scene, canvassing the area and interviewing witnesses to piece together the events.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office is requesting that anyone with information about the incident contact Anderson Area Crime Stoppers to provide anonymous tips. Information can be submitted online at p3tips.com/1038 or by calling 866-917-8477.

The incident was part of a broader pattern of violence during Juneteenth celebrations that weekend, with a separate shooting occurring at a festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that same evening, resulting in one death and seven injuries. The Anderson County shooting represents one of the most significant mass casualty incidents during recent Juneteenth celebrations in South Carolina.
