US Rep Slams Trump’s Speech to Military

U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett of Dallas has intensified her criticism of President Donald Trump following his West Point commencement address on May 24, 2025, calling on Republicans to question the president’s mental fitness for office. The congresswoman’s remarks came after Trump delivered what many described as an unconventional speech to military academy graduates.

During Trump’s address to the West Point Class of 2025, the president discussed topics ranging from trophy wives to luxury yachts, drawing sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers. Crockett expressed concern that military academy graduates did not expect their commander-in-chief to address such topics during their graduation ceremony.

The Texas Democrat specifically criticized Trump’s comments about real estate developer Bill Levitt, where the president speculated about trophy wives and their outcomes. Trump also made remarks about stealth aircraft technology, questioned the effectiveness of certain military equipment designs, and compared his legal investigations to those faced by infamous gangster Alphonse Capone.

Crockett stated that Republicans should “start calling him out and start questioning his mental acuity.” She emphasized her belief that Trump’s behavior demonstrates he is unqualified to potentially command troops in warfare situations, arguing that such conduct does not instill confidence in military leadership.

The congresswoman’s criticism extended beyond the West Point speech to Trump’s broader conduct in office. She referenced his criminal background and suggested that both his legal issues and mental state make him unfit for the presidency. Trump notably broke with tradition by refusing to remain at the ceremony to shake hands with graduating cadets.

Crockett’s vocal opposition to Trump has made her a prominent Democratic voice in the House of Representatives. She has emerged as a frequent critic of the administration’s policies and has been positioning herself for greater leadership roles within the Democratic caucus. The congresswoman is currently seeking to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee following the departure of Representative Gerry Connolly of Virginia.

During a June 2, 2025 interview, Crockett indicated she would pursue at least an impeachment inquiry into Trump if she becomes chair of the Oversight Committee. She suggested investigating various matters including Trump’s cryptocurrency activities, his pardoning of politically connected individuals, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s role in the administration. Democrats are scheduled to determine the ranking member position in a caucus election on June 24, 2025.

The White House has previously responded to Crockett’s criticisms through statements from Principal Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields, who characterized the congresswoman and her Democratic colleagues as ineffective in their oversight efforts. Fields suggested that Crockett’s constituents should consider replacing her in future elections.

Trump has repeatedly targeted Crockett by name in his public statements, calling her derogatory names and questioning her intelligence during various speeches and interviews. During an April Republican congressional fundraising dinner in Washington, Trump referred to Crockett while arguing that Democrats have lost confidence, suggesting that if she represents their new leadership, the party faces serious challenges.

Crockett has also been active in criticizing Trump’s upcoming military parade scheduled for June 14, 2025, which coincides with both Flag Day and the president’s 79th birthday. During a June 13, 2025 interview, she expressed hope that protests would overshadow the celebration and that Trump would be upset by the opposition demonstrations. The congresswoman indicated she was considering organizing her own counter-event, which she planned to call a “No Kings celebration.”

The congresswoman’s rise to prominence has been marked by her confrontational style with Republican lawmakers during committee hearings. She has gained national attention for her exchanges with Republican representatives, particularly during House Oversight Committee meetings. Her aggressive approach to politics has drawn both praise from progressive Democrats and criticism from Republicans who view her tactics as divisive.

Crockett has also been critical of Trump’s recent legislative achievements, including the tax and spending bill that passed the House with Republican support. She characterized the legislation as benefiting wealthy Americans while harming working-class families through cuts to social programs including Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The ongoing tension between Crockett and Trump reflects broader partisan divisions in Congress as Democrats seek to position themselves as effective opposition leaders heading into the 2026 midterm elections. Crockett’s fundraising success, having raised nearly 1.7 million dollars in the first quarter of 2025, demonstrates her growing influence within Democratic circles and her potential for securing leadership positions within the party.
