A Lowe’s employee shot and killed a coworker at the home improvement store on Viewmont Drive in Scranton, Pennsylvania, according to police.
Christopher M. Wasnetsky, age 36, was arrested after he called 911 to report the shooting. Police responded to the store at 12:36 a.m. on June 14, 2025, where they discovered Jeff Moeller on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds and a pool of blood surrounding him..
Wasnetsky told the 911 dispatcher that he was responsible for the shooting at the Dickson City Lowe’s. When asked why he did it, he cited ongoing harassment and other unresolved issues.
Police found four spent shell casings close to Moeller and located a Springfield 9mm semi-automatic pistol lying on the ground near a shopping cart about 30 feet from where Moeller was. The handgun was empty, but police recovered a loaded magazine and a live round nearby.
Paramedics rushed Moeller to Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, but he did not survive his injuries. Officers found Wasnetsky waiting at the store’s entrance, where they took him into custody without incident.
In his interviews with detectives, Wasnetsky explained his motives and actions in detail. He asserted that Moeller had been bothering him for several months and that management had not addressed the problem. Wasnetsky admitted he bought the handgun with the intention of targeting Moeller and had practiced shooting it in his backyard before the incident.
Store surveillance video documented the event. The footage shows Moeller operating a forklift when Wasnetsky approached with a shopping cart, pulled a pistol from the cart, and began firing at Moeller from about five feet away.
According to police, Wasnetsky admitted to shooting Moeller in the chest without warning. After Moeller fell and called for help, Wasnetsky said he did not want his coworker to suffer and proceeded to shoot him several more times in the head and chest.
An autopsy conducted by the Lackawanna County Coroner found that Moeller died from multiple gunshot wounds and classified his death as a homicide.
Wasnetsky has been charged with first- and third-degree murder and is being held without bail at Lackawanna County Prison pending further legal action.
Lowe’s, through senior director of external communications Meagan Bernstein, stated that the safety of their team members and customers is their top concern, describing the shooting as a tragic and senseless event. The company also noted that it is working closely with investigators.
The incident occurred during the overnight shift, a period when there are typically fewer employees and customers present. Both Wasnetsky and Moeller were reportedly working their usual shifts when the shooting occurred.
Police collected evidence, including surveillance recordings, the firearm, shell casings, and Wasnetsky’s confession. Authorities have called it a case of workplace violence, noting that the suspect contacted them immediately after the crime.
