Alexander gained early recognition as Susan Hunter Martin on “Days of Our Lives” from 1966 to 1973, establishing her reputation in the soap opera genre.
Her prominent role came with “General Hospital,” portraying Dr. Lesley Williams, later Webber, changing the portrayal of women in medicine on TV. Her final appearance on the ABC soap was in 2021, concluding a career that spanned six decades.
Susan Seaforth Hayes, a fellow soap opera actress from “Days of Our Lives,” posted a tribute on social media, remembering Alexander as a cherished friend and accomplished actress.
“Denise Alexander was a friend to treasure and an actress to applaud,” Hayes wrote, sharing a photo of herself, her husband Billy Hayes, and Alexander. “She was well established on Days when I joined the cast as Julie #4 (a replacement for 4 previous actresses). She watched Billy and I fall madly in love and, being a romantic lady herself, cheered us on.”
Hayes reflected on their shared experiences and success on “General Hospital,” noting their similar beginnings as child actors and upbringing in Christian Science. Hayes expressed gratitude for Alexander’s wisdom, humor, and kindness, stating that their shared moments were valuable.
Alexander’s passing resonated across the soap opera community, with fans sharing memories and condolences online. Many highlighted her role as a strong female figure during times when women in professions faced challenges for recognition.
Alexander’s character on “General Hospital” was involved in notable storylines over the years, such as the Laura and Luke arc, where she played Laura’s mother. Her portrayal of Dr. Lesley Webber became integral to the show, adding depth and authenticity to the evolving role.
Born in New York City, Alexander’s acting career started in childhood before she transitioned to adult roles. While soap operas were her mainstay, she also appeared on primetime television.
