Doug Kiker, known as “The Singing Garbage Man” from Season 18 of “American Idol,” has died at 32. His death was confirmed by his ex-fiancée Valerie Cook and family members, noting it occurred on Monday, March 10, 2025, in Denver, Colorado.
Kiker’s audition on “American Idol” had moved judge Katy Perry to tears, and his unexpected death has led to an outpouring of grief from fans and family. Angela Evans, his sister, announced the news on social media, stating the family was “completely unprepared” and mentioned they needed assistance to bring him home to Alabama for a proper memorial service.
A pedestrian alerted emergency services after seeing Kiker in apparent distress on the street. Concerned about a potential drug overdose, they called 911. Kiker was transported to a hospital, where he died five days later. Although the cause of death has not been officially confirmed, sources suggest drugs may have caused a heart attack.
Originally from Alabama, Kiker gained national attention in 2020 with his “American Idol” audition of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road.” His performance, despite having no formal experience, went viral, amassing over 200 million views on YouTube.
During the competition, Kiker stated, “I just don’t want to let my family down… I’ve been a good man my whole life.” He advanced to Hollywood Week but was eliminated after performing Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” not making it to the Top 20.
His brother William expressed his grief online, saying, “Dear brother I just want you to know that no matter where you are you will always be my baby brother. I just wish I had more time with you so until I can see you again say hey to bubba for me and tell him I love him rest in peace Douglas Kiker my baby brother.”
After being eliminated from “American Idol,” Kiker pursued a music career with the help of fans who crowdfunded his debut album. However, in May 2021, Kiker was arrested in Alabama on domestic violence charges. Jail records indicate he was charged with third-degree domestic violence and harassment following a 911 call from an adult woman. He was held on a $1,000 bond.
Kiker is survived by two daughters with his ex-fiancée Valerie Cook. Cook expressed her sadness to TMZ, lamenting that their daughters have lost their father.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched on Wednesday to help the family with funeral costs. The campaign, featuring photos of Kiker throughout his life, aims to raise $4,500.
Despite his brief time in the public eye, Kiker left a mark on “American Idol” judges and viewers. Judge Lionel Richie praised him during his audition, saying, “You’re a hell of a man.” Although he did not progress far in the competition, Kiker was invited back for the Season 18 finale to perform virtually with Rascal Flatts.
In one of his last social media posts, Kiker conveyed his commitment to pursuing his dreams and thanked his supporters. His sister Donna Kiker Carillos-Ramirez remembered him for his “biggest smile” and ability to “make you laugh.”
The GoFundMe page specifies that all contributions will go solely towards funeral expenses and supporting the family during this difficult period.
