Melania Trump’s Funeral Outfit Mocked

On Thursday morning, January 9, 2025, a state funeral service was held for former President Jimmy Carter at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Various ex-presidents, dignitaries, and family members attended the event. The attire worn by former First Lady Melania Trump, 54, was particularly noticeable.

In a rare convergence of American political leadership, the memorial service brought together the complete living lineup of U.S. presidents, their spouses, and key vice presidents at 11 a.m. The assemblage included the Clintons (with Hillary wearing patriotic jewelry), the Bushes, the Obama, the Bidens, and the Trumps, along with former VPs Gore and Pence and current VP Harris with their respective spouses. This extraordinary gathering represented decades of American executive leadership under one roof.

Melania Trump wore a distinctive Valentino piece from their 2019 Undercover collaboration in a striking fusion of classical art and modern fashion. The black trench dress stood out with its striking white collar, adorned with a romantic 19th-century sculpture print of embracing lovers surrounded by roses and butterflies. She kept the rest of her outfit simple, pairing it with classic black Manolo Blahnik pumps and minimal jewelry, letting the artistic statement piece command attention.

Social media responded swiftly to the unique outfit. Users posted a variety of comments, ranging from questioning the choice of attire to predicting a continuation of fashion-related discussions concerning the former First Lady. The trench coat’s oversized collar drew particular attention.

Some comments regarding the trench coat referenced cultural themes, with one user suggesting her attire was reminiscent of the television series “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Others focused on the outfit’s perceived religious implications.

During the service, political figures had several noteworthy interactions. Donald Trump, dressed in a black suit and blue tie, engaged in a seemingly friendly conversation with former President Obama. Kamala Harris, seated before the Trumps, remained focused on the proceedings. Karen Pence avoided interacting with Donald and Melania Trump, while her husband, former Vice President Mike Pence, exchanged pleasantries with the couple.

Jill Biden was in attendance, wearing a formal black outfit and Dior slingback pumps. Joe Biden was among the eulogists, along with Steve Ford, Ted Mondale, and Carter’s grandson Jason.

As Carter’s body was transported from the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, to the U.S. Capitol, Trump commented on Carter’s past decision regarding the Panama Canal during a press conference. Reflecting on the agreement, Trump stated, “Jimmy Carter gave it to them for $1, and they were supposed to treat us well. I thought it was a terrible thing to do. It was the most expensive structure ever built in the history of our country.”

Carter was buried in his birthplace of Plains, Georgia, next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, at their family home in the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park.
