Melania Trump’s Funeral Outfit Mocked

On Thursday morning, January 9, 2025, a state funeral service was held for former President Jimmy Carter at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The event was attended by various ex-presidents, dignitaries, and family members. The attire worn by former First Lady Melania Trump, 54, was particularly noticed.

The service started at 11 a.m. and assembled all five living U.S. presidents along with their spouses, and several vice presidents: Bill and Hillary Clinton, who sported a brooch with a bald eagle and the U.S. flag, George W. and Laura Bush, Barack Obama, Joe and Jill Biden, Donald and Melania Trump, Al Gore, Mike and Karen Pence, and Kamala Harris, and Doug Emhoff.

Trump donned a black Valentino trench coat dress with a unique design – a large white collar featuring a black-and-white print of a 19th-century neoclassical sculpture of lovers kissing amidst roses and butterflies. This design was part of Valentino’s fall 2019 collaboration with Undercover. Completing her ensemble were classic black Manolo Blahnik pumps and minimal jewelry.

Responses to the unique outfit were swift on social media. Users posted a variety of comments, ranging from questioning the choice of attire to predicting a continuation of fashion-related discussions concerning the former First Lady. The oversized collar of the trench coat drew particular attention.

Some comments referenced cultural themes, with one user suggesting her attire was reminiscent of the television series “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Others focused on perceived religious implications of the outfit.

Several noteworthy interactions between political figures were observed during the service. President-elect Donald Trump, in a black suit and blue tie, had an extensive conversation with former President Barack Obama. Vice President Kamala Harris, seated in front of the Trumps, kept her focus ahead during the service. Karen Pence notably refrained from interacting with Donald and Melania Trump, while her spouse, former Vice President Mike Pence, exchanged pleasantries with the couple.

Current First Lady Jill Biden, wearing a formal black outfit and Dior slingback pumps, was in attendance. President Joe Biden, 82, was among the eulogists, with others including Steve Ford, Ted Mondale, and Carter’s grandson Jason.

Earlier in the week, as Carter’s body was being transported from the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, to the U.S. Capitol, President-elect Trump criticized Carter’s decision on the Panama Canal during a press conference. “Jimmy Carter gave it to them for $1 and they were supposed to treat us well,” Trump stated. “I thought it was a terrible thing to do. It was the most expensive structure ever built in the history of our country.”

Carter will be buried in his birthplace of Plains, Georgia, next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, at their family home within the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park. Following the state funeral, his casket was transported to Georgia for burial.
