Jill Biden and Kamala Harris’ Frosty Interaction

On January 9, 2025, despite the cold weather in Washington, D.C., former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral atmosphere was notably frosty. The state funeral witnessed a series of politically charged moments, particularly between Jill Biden and Kamala Harris, which hinted at the waning days of a struggling Democratic administration.

During the service at the National Cathedral, the two Democratic leaders sat side-by-side but appeared distant. A body language expert observed they “seemed to create as much virtual space between them as possible,” sitting grimly and avoiding interaction while others engaged in conversation.

While Harris briefly held Biden’s purse as she got settled, following this brief interaction, both women avoided contact. White House aides said the environment was “depressing” and “draining” as the administration entered its last days.

Harris’ spokesperson, Kirsten Allen, refuted claims of discord, emphasizing the strong partnership and friendship between Harris and Joe Biden. She highlighted their collaborative efforts, stating they “have not only developed a close working relationship as governing partners, but they have also built a strong friendship that continues today.”

The funeral also highlighted other political tensions. Harris appeared visibly uncomfortable when she noticed Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama engaged in what seemed to be a friendly chat behind her, responding with what observers described as a sigh and eye roll.

The gathering of five living U.S. presidents highlighted subtle political dynamics. Former President George W. Bush tapped Obama on the belly as he passed, notably without acknowledging Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Laura Bush greeted those seated behind her, including former Vice Presidents Al Gore and Mike Pence, prompting her husband to do the same. In contrast, former Second Lady Karen Pence remained seated and appeared to avoid eye contact with the Trumps.

At Ethel Kennedy’s funeral service in October 2024, Biden was reportedly seen whispering to former President Obama about Harris, saying, “She… is not as strong as me.” Obama allegedly replied, “I know… that’s true… we have time.” This exchange, interpreted by certified forensic lip reader Jeremy Freeman, was reported to The New York Post.

The Bidens’ reportedly strained interactions with Harris have been noted as part of a broader pattern. Following Harris’ defeat on November 5, tensions appeared to resurface during the Kennedy Center Honors in December, where neither Joe nor Jill Biden acknowledged Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff during a standing ovation.

The tension has also manifested itself beyond public events. Sources familiar with White House dynamics report that Jill Biden has been particularly exasperated with the Democratic party establishment in recent months, with some alleging she urged her husband to “burn the whole thing down.”
