London Rozier Best, a 24-year-old Amazon delivery driver from Alpharetta, Georgia, is facing multiple charges after allegedly hitting and killing Sandra Fitts, a 79-year-old woman, in Canton, Georgia, on November 12, 2024, before continuing with his delivery route.
According to local authorities, Best was charged with first-degree vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death. It is alleged that his delivery truck struck Fitts as she crossed Cumming Highway near Jordan Lane. Fitts had recently left a family cemetery when the fatal incident took place.
Deputies responded to the scene of the hit-and-run at approximately 6:30 p.m. Evidence found at the scene indicated that an Amazon delivery truck was involved. During their response, a deputy noticed a delivery truck turning onto Bishop Drive and called for backup. The vehicle, which had sustained damage consistent with the accident, was later identified as the truck involved in the crash.
Subsequent to the identification of the vehicle, Best was arrested. Authorities noted that had Best remained at the scene, he would likely not be facing felony charges. However, a search warrant was obtained for the van and narcotics were found inside. This led to additional charges of possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, possession of a Schedule 1 narcotic (THC wax), and possession of drug-related objects.
Sandra Fitts, the victim of the hit-and-run, was well-known and cherished in her community. She is remembered as a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother who cared deeply for her family and had a passion for helping stray cats. Her sudden death has deeply affected those who knew her.
An Amazon spokesperson expressed the company’s condolences over the incident and confirmed their full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation. The spokesperson also confirmed that Best has been suspended from making deliveries until the outcome of the investigation.
Currently, Best is being held without bond at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center. Whether he has secured legal representation remains unknown.
This unfortunate incident highlights a larger debate about the safety protocols and responsibilities of delivery drivers, particularly from companies such as Amazon that emphasize speed and efficiency. In related news, an Amazon delivery van was involved in a fatal collision in Huntington Beach, California, in September 2024, resulting in the deaths of both occupants of the other vehicle.
