Melania Trump is planning an unconventional approach when she returns to the White House. Instead of being a full-time resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Trump intends to divide her time among Washington D.C., New York City, and Palm Beach, Florida, according to sources.
In preparation for this potential return, Trump has already begun assembling a team, with John Rogers, an executive vice president at Goldman Sachs, taking a leading role. Rogers, who served as an advisor during Trump’s first term, will provide advice on personnel and ceremonial matters.
Trump’s unique approach was first evidenced when she declined current First Lady Jill Biden’s invitation to the traditional White House tea meeting, citing scheduling conflicts due to her new memoir. Despite pushback from the president-elect’s team, Trump stood firm in her decision.
During her initial term in the White House from 2017 to 2021, it is reported that Trump did not enjoy her role as First Lady. Melania and her husband maintained separate bedrooms during their stay in the White House.
During her time as First Lady, Trump was known for her preference to spend time in the family residence and to receive guests in the “Map Room” near the elevator. She was also recognized for her work on projects like the renovation of the White House to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and a contentious revamp of the White House Rose Garden.
Trump’s primary focus is her son Barron, who is currently studying at New York University. “As much as Melania loves Mar-a-Lago and her life in Palm Beach, she will spend more time in New York with her son, who is more important to her than anything else,” sources close to her outlined.
Despite keeping a low profile during the campaign season, Trump’s social media posts have conveyed a positive and hopeful message about America’s future. However, she made only a few appearances at key campaign events, even as her husband held numerous rallies.
Trump’s previous initiatives included the “Be Best” campaign, aimed at combating online bullying, and advocacy for children affected by the opioid crisis. Additionally, she has established a foundation to raise funds for the education of children in foster care.
According to sources close to Trump, she plans to attend mandatory White House events while maintaining her lifestyle across the three locations. This approach would mark a significant departure from the traditional role of First Lady, which is typically centered in Washington D.C.
