On a recent episode of “Newsnight” aired by CNN on November 20, 2024, host Abby Phillip stepped in to address what she viewed as disrespectful conduct from pro-Trump guest, Bruce LeVell. The situation arose when LeVell used the term “dear” while addressing Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky during a fiery exchange.
The panel was discussing investigations involving former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, who was accused of sexual misconduct. LeVell insisted that the Department of Justice found “nothing there” concerning the accusations against Gaetz. Roginsky disputed this claim, pointing out that the DOJ had declared a lack of sufficient evidence to indict, not an affirmation of Gaetz’s innocence.
Reacting to LeVell’s use of “dear,” Phillip stated, “Do not address a grown woman in that condescending tone at my table.” LeVell heeded Phillip’s admonition, and the host steered the conversation back on track. This interaction underscores CNN’s ongoing endeavor to uphold respectful dialogue during political debates.
This wasn’t LeVell’s initial controversial appearance on CNN. In a prior episode in August, anchor Laura Coates criticized him for interrupting her during a panel discussion on ex-President Trump’s remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial background. Coates disputed LeVell’s claims about Harris’ racial identity throughout her political journey.
Gaetz, who was nominated for the attorney general position by Trump, later withdrew his candidacy, citing the ongoing probe as a distraction. Earlier, the Department of Justice had informed Gaetz that he wouldn’t be charged in relation to their investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, including accusations of inappropriate interactions with a 17-year-old girl and payments for “intimate encounters” with other women.
Meanwhile, CNN has seen a marked decrease in viewership, with the network’s ratings hitting their lowest point since 2000. Amid these setbacks, on-air staff are reportedly feeling the strain of possible downsizing, with high-profile anchors like Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett facing an uncertain future as the network contemplates salary cuts and layoffs.
CNN remains committed to maintaining a professional environment in its broadcasts. The network has made it clear that there is “zero room for racism or bigotry” and is committed to facilitating respectful conversations among dissenting parties, while ensuring guests aren’t disparaged.
