TV Host Announces Her Death on Instagram

On October 3, 2024, Fiona MacDonald, an esteemed Australian television personality, aged 67, announced her passing in an emotional Instagram post released by her sister Kylie.

MacDonald, recognized for her role in children’s programs such as “Wombat” and the popular game show “It’s a Knockout,” succumbed to a three-year fight with motor neuron disease (MND). This advanced neurologic condition affects the nerve cells that control muscle movement, leading to progressive muscle weakness and deterioration of physical abilities over time.

The candid post by MacDonald provided a window into her battle with MND, expressing affection for her family and an expectation of reuniting with them in the future.

MacDonald’s message highlighted her struggle with MND, stating, “I have left the building — Hopefully, I’m looking down from a cloud.” She detailed the effect of the disease on her physical state, including her increasing weakness and dependence on tube feeding owing to difficulty swallowing. Despite her appreciation for life, she opted for palliative care, finding solace in the thought of leaving her “tortured body.”

Despite her illness, MacDonald was known for her resilient spirit and dark humor. In a past interview, she discussed her commitment to raising funds for MND research. She embarked on a journey covering 9,653 miles across Australia, raising more than $153,000 for the MND research initiatives of Macquarie University. MacDonald also expressed her gratitude for the support, stating, “I carry your love and laughter with me.”

Friends and former co-workers paid tribute to MacDonald, remembering her for her professional contributions, vibrant sense of humor, and kindness. Television presenter Shelly Horton posted on social media, saying, “Rest easy, lovely Fi. You are missed already.” Horton’s sentiment was mirrored by many who had collaborated with MacDonald over her career.

MacDonald’s death sparked emotional responses from fans and the entertainment industry alike. Donna McCart, a longtime supporter, acknowledged the bravery of MacDonald and her family, particularly her sons and sister Kylie, in facing their final farewell.

MacDonald is survived by her two sons, Harry and Rafe, and her sisters Kylie and Jacki. Her enduring legacy includes her contributions to Australian television and the awareness and research for MND. Her final message concluded with an Irish blessing, a touching tribute to her spirit and a testament to her influence on those who knew her.
