Kaseem Ryan, popularly known as the underground rap sensation Ka, has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 52. His family confirmed his death in a statement released on Saturday. His demise on October 12, 2024, in New York City, New York, has left a deep void in the Brooklyn community and the world of hip-hop.
Raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, Ka made significant contributions to the underground rap scene. Ka’s musical journey started in the 1990s with the rap group Natural Elements, and he launched his solo career with the album “Iron Works” in 2008. He once mentioned, “I have a full-time job, and I work all the time. I try to keep that kinda low.”
Apart from his musical career, Ka served the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) for over two decades, attaining the rank of captain. He was on the front lines during the September 11 attacks and managed to juggle his duties as a firefighter and an artist. In a 2013 media interaction, Ka stated, “I never wanted to be ‘The Rapping Captain.’ I try to be a good firefighter. And when I come home, I try to make some dope music.”
In September, Ka released his final album, “The Thief Next to Jesus,” further exemplifying his distinctive style that marries vivid storytelling with intricate themes. His music is often characterized as a fusion of stark realism and deep introspection.
Ka is mourned by his mother, sister, and wife, Mimi Valdé, an esteemed journalist and producer. Valdé has had a prolific career, having served as the editor-in-chief at VIBE, and recently producing Pharrell Williams’ new autobiographical film, “Piece By Piece.” She survives him.
Valdé shared a heartfelt message on social media, expressing her deep love for her late husband. She referred to him as her king, hero, and best friend. She assured that their love is eternal and wished him a peaceful rest, vowing to see him again.
