Popular Radio Host Dies at 58

The notable radio personality Wanda Smith, revered by the Atlanta, Georgia community, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Oct. 12. She died just a day after she celebrated her 58th birthday.

Smith was a dynamic figure on V-103’s “Frank and Wanda in the Morning.” Her contribution to Atlanta’s media and entertainment industry, where she was a constant presence for over two decades, was significant.

V-103’s Senior Vice President Rick Caffey confirmed Smith’s death and recognized her substantial contributions to the station and the wider community. Caffey emphasized Smith’s ability to bring joy to listeners over the years and her dedication to helping those in need behind the scenes. V-103 posted a heartfelt tribute on social media, acknowledging that Smith had been a “major part” of V-103 since 2006​.

In 1998, Smith’s radio career started when she joined Frank Ski as co-host of the popular “Frank and Wanda in the Morning” show. Recognized for her humor, warmth, and ability to connect with listeners, Smith helped establish the show as a pillar of Atlanta radio. After briefly leaving in 2012, she returned to co-host with Ryan Cameron, before reuniting with Frank Ski. Smith’s career at V-103 spanned over 20 years, ending in 2019​.

Smith was not only a radio host but also a talented comedian and writer. She wrote for successful shows such as “Def Comedy Jam” and BET’s “Comicview,” and performed weekly at the Atlanta Comedy Theater. She also showcased her comedic abilities in films, including Tyler Perry’s “Madea Goes to Jail” and “​Madea’s Witness Protection.”

Upon hearing of Smith’s death, tributes from many who were saddened by the loss of such a vibrant and influential person flowed in. V-103 intended to honor Smith during its “Sunday Morning Praise” segment, inviting listeners to share their memories and experiences with her. Fans and peers likewise remembered her for her humor and her impactful work behind the scenes, frequently assisting others in need​.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens paid his respects, characterizing Smith as a cultural icon whose voice was trusted and relied upon by many Atlantans. The mayor highlighted Smith’s ability to bring laughter into both good times and challenging periods, making her a unique and cherished figure in the city. He extended his condolences to Smith’s family and the numerous Atlantans touched by her work.​

Though Smith earned widespread recognition for her work in radio and comedy, her career also had its challenging moments. In 2018, she was involved in a notable incident when a public argument with comedian Katt Williams led to a confrontation outside the Atlanta Comedy Theater. Her husband, LaMorris Sellers, allegedly confronted Williams with a gun during the escalation, but no charges were filed.

Despite these challenges, Smith’s legacy is one of resilience, humor, and community impact. She is remembered by fans, colleagues, and fellow entertainers as someone who utilized her platform to entertain and uplift those around her.

Smith is survived by her husband, LaMorris Sellers, and their three children.
