On Monday, October 7, 2024, experienced news anchor Gustavo Macalpin was suddenly dismissed during a live broadcast on Channel 66 in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, following his criticism of a political appointment.
Macalpin, a seven-year veteran of Channel 66, hosted the politically charged program “Ciudadano 2.0.” He raised questions during the show about the appointment of Carlos Torres, husband of Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, to the role of special projects coordinator for Tijuana. This high-level position brought about concerns of potential conflicts of interest due to Torres’ political connections.
Not long after making these comments, Macalpin received a foreboding text message. Luis Arnoldo Cabada, owner and general manager of Channel 66, soon made a rare on-set appearance, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter. He thanked Macalpin for his years of service before announcing his dismissal. “I came to thank you for your last six years of work,” said Cabada, “but this is your last day.”
The abrupt termination has led to speculation about the relationship between Channel 66 and the Governor’s office. Macalpin suggested on TikTok that his dismissal could be linked to his continued political criticism, but he also mentioned that the decision was likely made by the station owner long before his criticism of Torres.
Francisco Javier Garcia, Channel 66 News Director, confirmed that there had been recent tensions between Macalpin and Cabada. Cabada later called into Garcia’s news show to apologize for the way the dismissal was handled and mentioned on social media that, despite Macalpin being an excellent individual, he wasn’t a good fit for the Channel 66 team.
Social media users criticized Cabada and held Governor Ávila accountable for Macalpin’s termination. The governor, however, stated on social media that she considers Macalpin a friend and wished him well in his future endeavors.
While expressing surprise at the sudden firing, Governor Ávila denied any involvement in the decision. She reiterated her commitment to free speech on Facebook, stating that she respects everyone’s right to voice their opinions.
In a press conference on Wednesday morning, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum advocated for Macalpin’s return to his show. She stated that if his dismissal was due to his criticism of the governor or anyone else, it was inappropriate. The Mexicali Network of Journalists has yet to make a statement on the matter.
