Paul Di’Anno, the inaugural lead vocalist of the globally recognized British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, passed away at his Salisbury, England home on October 21, 2024. He was 66 years old. The announcement of his death was made by his record label, Conquest Music, without providing further detail on the cause.
From 1978 to 1981, Di’Anno was the face of Iron Maiden, during which he participated in the recording of two critical albums – the eponymous debut “Iron Maiden” (1980) and “Killers” (1981). These albums were instrumental in defining the band’s unique sound. Di’Anno left the band in 1981, after which Bruce Dickinson assumed the role of lead vocalist. Di’Anno later admitted that his excessive party lifestyle was detrimental to his career, the band, and their fanbase.
His death was met with profound sorrow by the current members of Iron Maiden.
Di’Anno’s significant contributions to songs such as “Running Free,” “Sanctuary,” and “Twilight Zone/Wrathchild” were key in defining the band’s early musical direction. Iron Maiden recognized Di’Anno’s “groundbreaking role as a vocalist and frontman” and his crucial role in setting the band’s trajectory.
Despite parting ways with Iron Maiden, Di’Anno remained active in the music scene, performing with several bands, including Battlezone and Killers, and also pursuing a solo career. His career retrospective album, “The Book of the Beast,” was launched in September 2024.
In recent years, Di’Anno encountered serious health issues, including an abscess in his leg the size of a golf ball that necessitated knee surgery. His former bandmates helped cover the costs of his medical care. He also struggled with pneumonia during a tour in Mexico, which resulted in further infections and complications.
Despite these health-related challenges, Di’Anno continued to perform and managed to hold over 100 concerts since 2023, often appearing on stage in a wheelchair. His recent interactions with Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris were largely centered around their mutual love for the West Ham United football club.
Iron Maiden paid tribute to Di’Anno on their social media platforms, accompanied by a photograph of Di’Anno with bassist Steve Harris. The band expressed deep sorrow over his demise, reflecting on his crucial role in shaping Iron Maiden’s journey over nearly five decades. They acknowledged his pioneering role as a frontman and vocalist, on stage and in their first two albums, and stated that he will be fondly remembered by the band and fans worldwide.
Di’Anno’s influence was not confined to Iron Maiden. His early recordings have been cited as influential by bands such as Metallica, Pantera, and Sepultura.
