Famous Actor Dead at 76

On September 26, 2024, John David Ashton, esteemed actor and notable for his portrayal of Detective Sergeant John Taggart in the “Beverly Hills Cop” series, passed away in Fort Collins, Colorado. He was 76.

Ashton’s death was confirmed by his agent, Alan Somers, who revealed that the actor had been fighting cancer. A native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Ashton had a remarkable career in the entertainment sector, featuring in over 200 productions across stage and screen.

Born in 1948, Ashton pursued theater arts at the University of Southern California before launching his successful acting career. His portrayal of the straightforward Detective Sergeant Taggart in the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, alongside Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold, earned him widespread acclaim. Ashton was featured in the first three parts of the four-part franchise, starting with the debut in 1984.

Ashton reprised his role in “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” which debuted on Netflix this year. In the latest sequel, Ashton’s character was promoted to police chief, leading him to reunite with Murphy’s humorous Axel Foley and Reinhold’s friendly Detective Billy Rosewood.

Throughout his career, Ashton showcased his acting range, embracing diverse roles in television and films. His prominent appearances include the popular TV series “M*A*S*H,” the John Hughes 1987 comedy-drama “Some Kind of Wonderful,” and the 1988 action-comedy “Midnight Run,” opposite Robert De Niro.

Ashton’s repertoire also includes roles in films like “Breaking Away,” “Gone Baby Gone,” and “An Eye for an Eye.” On television, he had a recurring role in the acclaimed series “Dallas” in the late 1970s.

In a 2020 interview, Ashton reminisced about the rapport he shared with his “Beverly Hills Cop” co-stars, Murphy and Reinhold. He credited director Martin Brest for fostering improvisation and letting the actors naturally evolve their characters.

Late in his career, Ashton shifted from acting to co-host the “Ashton and Davis Show” on 870 ESPN Radio, highlighting his interest in sports.

Ashton is remembered by colleagues and fans for his commitment to his work and his ability to animate characters on screen. His agent, Alan Somers, told TMZ, “John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service. John’s impact on the world will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.”

Ashton leaves behind his wife, children, and step-children. A commemorative service will be held at a future date. The family has asked for donations in Ashton’s honor to be made to Pathways Hospice Care in Larimer County, Colorado.
