Teen Killed by Gunshot in School Bathroom

A fatal shooting at Joppatowne High School in Joppa, Maryland on Friday, September 6, 2024 resulted in the untimely death of 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant. The incident took place in a boys’ bathroom on the school’s ground floor during a dispute.

Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler reported that the incident happened during school hours when a heated argument escalated between Grant and a 16-year-old fellow student, Jaylen Prince. “This was the first day of the suspect’s attendance at school despite being the fourth day of the school year,” Gahler revealed.

The shooting unfolded rapidly with one gunshot wounding Grant. Prince left the school premises immediately after the incident. Quick action by several people ensured Grant was removed from the bathroom. School nurses provided immediate care until the arrival of emergency services.

Grant was transported to a local hospital where attempts to save his life were unsuccessful. He succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

Law enforcement officers apprehended Jaylen Prince shortly after the incident. However, due to Prince’s age, the authorities faced challenges in questioning him directly. Sheriff Gahler stated that they were legally restrained from communicating with the 16-year-old suspect.

Prince, now in custody without bail, faces charges including first- and second-degree murder, and first- and second-degree assault, among other offenses. A search of his room revealed ammunition under his bed and photos of him on his phone with a gun.

The incident resulted in an immediate lockdown of Joppatowne High School. Emergency protocols were activated and parents were informed about the situation and how to reunite with their children.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed his condolences in an official statement, addressing the larger issue of school safety. He conveyed his sorrow for the Joppatowne community and the victim’s family, friends, educators, and mentors, acknowledging the premature loss of young Grant.

The governor praised the prompt response by local law enforcement, Maryland State Police, first responders, and school staff. He also stressed his administration’s commitment to assisting families, community leaders, and local law enforcement in their efforts to improve school and community safety.

This incident has sparked renewed conversations about school safety measures and the prevention of gun violence in educational environments. Calls for enhanced safety protocols and stricter gun control laws have become louder from the community members to avoid such tragedies in the future.

Joppatowne High School suspended operations from September 9 to September 11, 2024. During this temporary closure, the district offered support services to students, including access to counseling professionals and the continuation of meal programs.
