Stephen Curry, NBA star and point guard for the Golden State Warriors, made an unexpected appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois on August 22, 2024. He announced his endorsement of Kamala Harris for the presidency through a sincere video message.
Fresh from leading Team USA to victory at the Paris Olympics, Curry stressed Harris’ potential to bring unity to the nation and encouraged the public to engage in the forthcoming election. Curry, adorned with his Olympic gold medal, stated in his video message, “This is about preserving hope and belief in our country.” He further expressed his conviction in Harris’ suitability for the presidency and the privilege he feels in backing her.
Curry, admired for his skill on the basketball court and his social activism, showed faith in Harris’ ability to lead. The pair’s connection originated from their common roots in the San Francisco Bay Area. Harris, an Oakland native, has been a long-time supporter of the Warriors. Curry had the opportunity to meet her when the Warriors visited the White House following their 2022 championship victory.
The convention saw participation from several sports personalities who shared their political views. Stephen Curry’s manager, Golden State Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr, also endorsed Harris on the opening night of the convention. Kerr justified his decision to step out of his usual environment and speak at the DNC.
Kerr emphasized his belief in a certain type of leadership that values dignity, truthfulness, humor, and genuine care for those being led. He identified these qualities in both Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz.
Concluding his speech, Kerr alluded to Stephen Curry’s famous “Night, Night” celebration gesture. He expressed hope that once the election results are final, they would be able to tell Donald Trump, in Curry’s words, “Night, night!”
