Trump’s Response to Oprah’s Endorsement

Television icon and billionaire, Oprah Winfrey, made an unexpected appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois last week, expressing her support for Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential bid. Her endorsement, however, spurred both applause and dispute.

Oprah’s speech, filled with fervent appeals for decency, respect, and common sense, provoked a reaction from the Trump campaign. They quickly unearthed an old letter that Oprah had once written to Donald Trump, expressing her admiration for him.

In her speech, Oprah urged Americans to prioritize loyalty to the Constitution over loyalty to any individual. She stressed the need for leaders who reflect the nation’s values. “Decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024,” she stated to resounding applause, “And just plain common sense—common sense tells you that Kamala Harris and Tim Walz can give us decency and respect.”

The endorsement was met with resistance from the Trump campaign’s “War Room” X account, who shared a personal letter written by Oprah to Trump in January 2000. The letter, written in response to an excerpt from Trump’s book “The America We Deserve,” expressed her admiration for his leadership qualities. The Trump campaign highlighted a line from the letter where Oprah wrote, “Too bad we’re not running for office. What A TEAM!.”

This action was viewed by many as an attempt by the Trump campaign to shake Oprah’s endorsement of Harris by revealing her past admiration for Trump. Oprah and Trump’s relationship has undeniably changed over the years, with Trump stating in his book that Oprah ceased communication with him after he announced his presidential campaign.

Oprah’s DNC speech was not only an endorsement of Harris but also a critique of the current political landscape, particularly directed towards Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance and his controversial comments about “childless cat ladies.”

Oprah’s backing is seen as notable, given her influential status and the so-called “Oprah effect,” which has previously influenced public opinion. Her support for Barack Obama in 2008 is often credited with providing a significant boost to his campaign during the Democratic primary. Similarly, her endorsement of Harris is viewed as a potential game-changer, possibly swaying undecided voters and independents.

The Trump campaign’s decision to release the old letter aimed to portray Oprah as inconsistent and emphasize her past admiration for Trump. However, the transformation in Oprah’s statements from 2000 to 2024 mirrors the broader political and social changes that have occurred over the past two decades.

The response from the Trump campaign, while highlighting past connections, also highlights the deepening political divides in the country. As the 2024 election looms, endorsements from influential figures like Oprah could play a critical role in public opinion. The impact of a 24-year-old letter on voters is uncertain, but it is clear that both campaigns are employing every possible strategy for the highest office in the country.
