Tanzanian music suffered a significant loss on August 11, 2024, with the tragic death of Joseph Francis, more popularly known as Mandojo. The well-known musician was fatally beaten by a security guard who mistakenly believed him to be a thief. The incident took place at the All Saints Parish Catholic Church in the Nzuguni district of Dodoma, the capital city of Tanzania.

Raphael Keneth Ndamanhwa, the security guard on duty at the church, has been apprehended by the police on charges related to the fatal attack. The Acting Commander of the Dodoma Regional Police, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Anania Amo, confirmed Ndamanhwa as the main suspect. The investigation into the events leading to Mandojo’s death continues.

At 45, Mandojo was a significant figure in the bongo flava music genre and was celebrated for his collaborations with fellow artist Domokaya. His music, a fusion of traditional Tanzanian elements with international influences, was appreciated by fans across the region. Some of his widely recognized songs include “Wanok Nok,” “Dingi,” and “Nikupe Nini.”

Reports indicate that Mandojo was found concealed in a dog kennel on the church property, leading to Ndamanhwa’s erroneous identification of him as a thief. Along with several individuals who were attending a service at the church, the guard restrained and attacked Mandojo. The singer succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital.

Mandojo’s untimely death has shocked the Tanzanian music fraternity. Fellow musicians have taken to social media platforms to mourn the loss and pay tribute to the late artist. Domokaya, a close collaborator, expressed his grief on Instagram, finding it hard to believe the tragic events, especially as Mandojo’s birthday was due on the 22nd of the month. He wished his departed friend eternal peace.

Musician Anselm Tryphone, also referred to as Soggy Doggy, also expressed his deep sorrow, stating that his heart was filled with pain. He lamented the loss of his friend and “brother,” Mandojo, and extended his condolences to the bereaved family and friends.

The incident occurred tragically close to what would have been Mandojo’s 46th birthday, adding to the grief of those close to him. The ongoing investigation by Dodoma Regional Police is keenly followed by fans and fellow artists, who are hoping for justice.

Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, Mandojo’s contributions to the Tanzanian music scene will be remembered. His legacy continues through his music, which continues to resonate with listeners.
