Popular “Scarface” Actor Dies at 68

Angel Salazar, widely recognized for his role as Chi Chi in the 1983 movie “Scarface,” has died at the age of 68. His longtime friend and representative, Ann Wingsong, announced that Salazar died on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at a friend’s residence in Brooklyn, New York. His unexpected death has sparked a wave of tributes from his colleagues and friends.

Born in Cuba in 1956, Salazar started his acting career in the late 1970s. However, his breakthrough came with his portrayal of Chi Chi, Al Pacino’s faithful companion in “Scarface.” The film, directed by Brian De Palma and penned by Oliver Stone, gained a significant cultural status. Salazar’s role in the movie cemented his standing in the film industry.

In “Scarface,” Salazar’s character Chi Chi plays a pivotal part, especially in the film’s gripping “chainsaw scene,” where he aids in saving Montana’s life.

Post “Scarface,” Salazar’s acting career continued in both television and film. He joined forces with Pacino once again in 1993’s “Carlito’s Way,” another film directed by De Palma. His filmography also includes “Punchline” (1988) with Tom Hanks and “Where the Buffalo Roam” (1980). His television appearances include shows such as “In Living Color” and “The New $treetz Seriez.”

Apart from acting, Salazar was a renowned stand-up comedian, known for his lively performances and his catchphrase, “Sheck it out!” He was featured in multiple HBO comedy specials and took part in the NBC series “Last Comic Standing.” His comedy routines, often inspired by his Cuban roots, struck a chord with his audience and established his standing in the comedy scene.

Tito Puente Jr., the recording artist, expressed his sadness over Salazar’s death and praised him as an incredible actor and a close friend. He said that Salazar’s roles and comedic talents, from “Scarface” to “Carlito’s Way,” will be sorely missed. Actress Kadrolsha Ona Carole also shared her sorrow, saying that she learned of her dear friend Angel Salazar’s death upon returning home from filming. She stated that she would miss his playful antics and hearty laughter.

Salazar’s last performance took place earlier this month at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada, where he performed from August 1 to August 4. Wingsong disclosed that the actor had been battling heart problems in recent years, including an enlarged heart. However, the official cause of his death remains undisclosed.

At the time of his death, Salazar was reprising his role as Chi Chi in “The Brooklyn Premiere,” a movie directed by Eric Spade Rivas. The film also reunited him with his “Scarface” co-star, Steven Bauer. This final appearance highlights Salazar’s enduring dedication to his profession and his fans.
