2 Dead, 5 Injured in Mass Shooting at BBQ

A tragic shooting took place in Maplewood Park, Rochester, New York on the evening of Sunday, July 28, 2024. According to local law enforcement, two females lost their lives, while five other people sustained injuries. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. amid a large crowd of individuals partaking in barbeque and outdoor activities, as promoted by event flyers.

The Rochester police department confirmed the death of 25-year-old city employee Tyasia Manning. Another victim, Phylicia Council, 34, suffered life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to them. The five other injured individuals received treatment for minor injuries at nearby medical facilities.

The serenity of the park was shattered when gunshots rang out, sending park attendees running for cover. A video allegedly recorded during the incident and later shared on social media depicts the ensuing chaos as people desperately sought safety amidst the sound of multiple firearms being discharged.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Rochester Police, Irondequoit Police, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police, rushed to the scene. Police Captain Greg Bello briefed the media, indicating that the exact number of shooters involved remains uncertain.

Later, Rochester Police Chief David Smith confirmed that the search for more than one suspect is underway.

Maplewood Park, typically known for its picturesque scenery and popularity as a meeting place, was transformed into a massive crime scene late Sunday. Investigators were observed meticulously searching the area for ballistic evidence. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information, or video footage of the incident, to step forward. “Somebody that pulled out a gun, obviously that’s incredibly unacceptable in our society,” Bello emphasized, expressing his disbelief at the decision to use firearms in such a peaceful setting.

This incident at Maplewood Park is part of an alarming increase in violent crime in Rochester. On the same day, an unrelated early morning shooting resulted in the death of a man in his 30s. Additionally, a separate occurrence on Friday night led to the fatal stabbing of 38-year-old Christopher Austin. In the stabbing case, law enforcement has apprehended and charged Herbert Montgomery, 45, with second-degree murder, and Sara Lee McFadden, 42, with tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution.

The string of violent incidents has left the community in shock. Addressing the culprits of the park shooting, Chief Smith issued a stern warning: “To the folks who did this, I will be seeing you.”

Mayor Malik Evans also called for public assistance in the ongoing investigations. “We need the community’s help to bring those responsible to justice,” he stated. “If you know something, say something. We must work together to ensure our parks and our city remain safe.”

Rochester, located about 340 miles northwest of New York City, is now on high alert following the recent surge in violent incidents. Local law enforcement agencies are increasing their efforts to curb the violence and maintain public safety. The ongoing investigation at Maplewood Park emphasizes the crucial role of public cooperation in identifying and capturing those responsible.
