Actor Killed in Shark Attack

Forty-nine-year-old surfing champion and actor Tamayo Perry lost his life in a shark attack off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. Perry, known for his roles in films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Blue Crush,” was a revered figure in the surfing community.

Perry, who was serving as a lifeguard, was attacked near Goat Island while taking a break from his shift on Sunday, June 23, 2024. His severely injured body was discovered off Mālaekahana Beach on the North Shore of Oahu. Emergency services responded promptly, ferrying him to shore via jet ski. Despite their efforts, Perry succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

“Tamayo was a lifeguard loved by all. He’s well-known on the North Shore as a professional surfer known worldwide. His charisma was contagious, and while many adored him, his affection for others was even greater,” said Kurt Lager, the acting chief of Honolulu Ocean Safety, expressing grief over Perry’s sudden death.

Voicing his sorrow, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry’s death a “tragic loss” and referred to him as a “legendary waterman and highly respected.”

Born in 1975, Perry’s love for surfing began when he was only 12. He swiftly rose to prominence in the local surfing circles. By 1997, he had created a unique tube riding style and gained respect for his prowess at the North Shore pipeline. His victory in the esteemed Pipeline Masters competition in 1999 fortified his reputation as a top-tier surfer.

Beyond his accomplishments in surfing, Perry also had a commendable acting career. He made appearances in several films and TV shows, including “Lost,” “Hawaii Five-0,” and “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.’

Many will remember Perry for his dedication as a lifeguard, his prowess as a professional surfer, and his warm presence in the community. His significant contributions to ocean safety and the world of surfing have left a lasting impression on both those who knew him personally and the wider surfing community.
