Sarah Becker, who gained popularity as a cast member of MTV’s “The Real World,” took her own life at the age of 52, as confirmed by her family. The tragic event took place last week at her residence in Illinois, a state she moved to the previous year to look after her ill mother and sister, with plans to eventually return to California.
Becker was part of the fifth season of “The Real World” that aired in 1996 when she was 25 years old. During that period, she worked for Wildstorm Comics in La Jolla, California and was known to portray herself as “a 19-year-old in a 25-year-old’s body.”
According to her family, Becker had been battling mental health problems. These issues were amplified due to her role as a caregiver and a recent skateboarding accident. In addition, her father passed away earlier in February 2024.
Tributes for Becker have flooded social media, with friends and colleagues remembering her vibrant and positive nature. Jeff Mariotte, an author and former colleague at Wildstorm Comics, shared on Facebook, “Sarah brightened every room she walked into. She was adored by fans, and we all cherished her.”
Joel Benjamin, a friend from her “Real World” stint, expressed his grief by writing, “I just found out that one of the nicest people who ever existed in my life has passed away. Whenever I thought of her, I saw her smile and cheerful personality. You were loved and will be missed.” The statement was shared in a post.
Comic artist Alé Garza, who attributes his artistic journey to Becker, expressed his gratitude in these words, “I owe it all to you. You were an amazing person and will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Sarah Becker.”
Becker’s influence stretched beyond her reality TV show appearance. Her stint on “The Real World” showcased her unique persona and her ability to connect with her co-stars and audience. Following the show, she continued to make her mark in the comic book industry with her significant contributions to various projects at Wildstorm Comics.
