Firefighter “High School Sweethearts” Found Dead

Chandler Kuhbander and Raegan Anderson, both firefighters from Georgia and once high school sweethearts, were found dead in Cocke County, Tennessee, almost a week after their disappearance. The bodies were discovered on June 30, 2024, wrapping up a multistate search effort involving several law enforcement agencies.

The bodies of Kuhbander and Anderson, as well as Anderson’s car, were located on Hollow Road in Cosby, Tennessee, a distance of approximately 400 miles from their last known location, as per the announcement by the Hinesville Police Department, Georgia. The investigation into their deaths is being spearheaded by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office.

The pair were last spotted on June 24. Anderson, a committed member of the Liberty County Fire Services Station #1 in Midway, Georgia, was seen on gas station surveillance footage. Kuhbander, a senior firefighter with the department, was last noticed exiting a gym in Savannah, Georgia on the same day.

Their disappearance came on the heels of several distressing incidents. Anderson and Kuhbander split up in 2023, and two days before their disappearance, Anderson was arrested for confronting Kuhbander at an Olive Garden Restaurant during his date with another woman and damaging his car. She was charged with second-degree criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.

Jane Kuhbander, Chandler’s mother, voiced her fears for her son’s safety in the days preceding the grim discovery. She revealed that Anderson had made multiple threats of self-harm and hinted that her son may not have accompanied Anderson voluntarily. “He was telling me she was blowing up his phone, and he said that she had threatened that she was going to commit suicide. And it’s not the first time she’s done it,” she shared.

The bodies were discovered in Anderson’s black 2017 Ford Focus bearing Georgia license plates. The car was seen in various locations, including Savannah, Georgia and Richmond Hill, Georgia before it was finally located in Tennessee.

The Liberty County Fire Services issued a poignant statement grieving the loss of their fellow firefighters. “They put their hearts and souls into protecting and serving the citizens of Liberty County. Our prayers, and those of the department, are with the families during this most difficult time,” the department posted on Facebook.

An autopsy is scheduled to establish the exact cause and circumstances of their deaths. The investigation is still in progress, with authorities endeavoring to reconstruct the events that led to this tragic end.

The community, co-workers, and family members are mourning the loss of Raegan Anderson and Chandler Kuhbander. Their dedication to their firefighting duties and public service will be remembered and honored by those who knew them.
