Pat Sajak, widely recognized as the host of “Wheel of Fortune” for the past 41 seasons, is not only retiring but also transitioning into an unexpected new role. His final appearance on the popular game show was June 7, and he is already preparing for his next endeavor—a leading role in the crime play “Prescription: Murder” set to be staged in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The crime play is slated to debut next summer at the Hawaii Theatre, a historical landmark in the state. Sajak will be stepping away from his familiar television persona to play a brilliant psychiatrist tangled in a dark plot. This role is set to test and develop his acting capabilities in significant ways. The play, which served as the foundation for the renowned detective character Columbo, is anticipated to keep audiences on the edge of their seats with its intriguing plot twists.
Sajak’s collaboration with his long-term friend, Joe Moore, a noted newscaster for KHON-TV in Hawaii, is also worth mentioning. Their partnership at Hawaii Theatre has lasted over 30 years, resulting in notable productions like “The Odd Couple” and “The Honeymooners.” Sajak recently revealed in an interview, “Joe and I have a special chemistry on stage that we hope brings a fresh energy to this classic thriller.”
The play “Prescription: Murder” will be performed from July 31 to August 10, 2025. Sajak will inhabit the character of Dr. Roy Flemming, who devises a clever alibi to get rid of his domineering wife, played by Amy K. Sullivan. As the story unfolds, Moore’s character, Lt. Columbo, starts to dismantle Flemming’s plan, culminating in an exciting climax.
The cast also includes local talents such as Bryce Moore, Therese Olival, and Aiko Chinen, offering a diverse mix of experience and new perspectives. Directed by Rob Duval, the production seeks to present an engaging reinterpretation of this classic mystery.
Away from the spotlight, Sajak seems comfortable with his decision to leave “Wheel of Fortune,” viewing his tenure with both nostalgia and anticipation. “It’s a perfect time for a change. Hosting has been a significant part of my life, but I’m excited about returning to my first love—theater,” he stated, humorously adding that he’s now “patiently waiting for grandkids.”
As Ryan Seacrest takes over the reins of “Wheel of Fortune,” he acknowledges the legacy he steps into. “Stepping into Pat’s shoes is an immense honor. I look forward to continuing the show’s legacy and hope to bring my own flavor to it,” Seacrest conveyed.
Sajak’s shift from a revered game show host to a stage actor underlines a broader tale of transformation and artistic exploration. His new role not only offers him a platform to display his theatrical talents but also reacquaints him with his roots in drama, demonstrating that successful careers can indeed start exciting new phases.
