A peaceful neighborhood in Ankara, Turkey, was disrupted by a tragic event on June 11, 2024. David Thomas Blyth, a 53-year-old British oil magnate, fatally shot his wife, Victoria Vera Blyth, before ending his own life. The incident reportedly arose from a dispute over text messages on Victoria’s phone.
The couple’s three children, aged four, ten, and 14, were present but unharmed at the time of the incident. After the tragic event, they were taken into the care of Victoria’s family, who arrived in Turkey promptly. Victoria’s sister, Alexandra, posted a heartfelt message on Instagram mourning the loss of her sister, expressing both her deep sorrow and remembering Victoria’s vibrant personality.
Victoria Blyth, 40, originally from South Africa, was a popular TV presenter on Europe 2’s Morning Show and a noted figure in the Czech Republic. She released a successful album in 2004 and was known for her significant charity work. She was involved with Velvet Smile, an organization that helps families with sick or disabled children and victims of domestic abuse.
David Blyth was the operator of the international firm ASG Inspection and had a prosperous career in the oil sector. The Blyths had previously lived in Prague, Czech Republic, but relocated to Turkey in 2019 due to David’s business commitments.
Friends of the couple revealed that their marriage was marred by jealousy and unfaithfulness. According to a close friend, Victoria had intended to leave David and return to the Czech Republic. She had expressed these plans to friends via text messages, which David found, leading to the fatal altercation.
In her last interview, Victoria mentioned the uncertainty of the future, stating, “You never know what can happen.” Her words now seem eerily prescient following the recent tragedy.
Victoria’s philanthropic efforts included the establishment of DazSpor, an organization that held running events across Turkey, including Ankara’s inaugural half-marathon. DazSpor expressed their sorrow over her death on social media, acknowledging her passion and commitment towards improving the lives of others.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Turkish police, with detailed information yet to be disclosed. The UK Foreign Office and the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs have verified the deaths and are providing consular assistance to the family. A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office indicated that they are in contact with the local authorities while supporting the bereaved family.
As the inquiry progresses, attention is focused on supporting the three children who are now left without parents. Alexandra, Victoria’s sister, has made a heartfelt plea for privacy during this time, emphasizing the family’s need for time to grieve and heal while prioritizing the well-being of the children.
