Murder-Suicide: Couple Found Dead in Woods

The remains of Cynthia “Cindy” Roberson Gobble, age 60, and her estranged husband, Gregory Wayne Gobble, age 59, were located in a forested area in Iredell County, North Carolina. The couple was reported missing and their bodies were eventually discovered on the morning of May 31, 2024, concluding a search sparked by an Ashanti Alert for Cynthia.

The investigation was initiated on Thursday evening when relatives asked for a welfare check on Cynthia at her residence in Mocksville, North Carolina. Upon arrival, deputies from the Davie County Sheriff’s Office found her home deserted, with her purse, wallet, and insulin left behind, indicating that she hadn’t willingly left.

Given the circumstances, notably Cynthia’s ongoing divorce and separation from Gregory, authorities suspected foul play from the outset. The couple’s family hadn’t been able to reach either of them since late Wednesday afternoon. The search for the Gobbles was stepped up, with law enforcement scrutinizing familiar locations. Gregory was soon deemed a person of interest and the investigation narrowed in on his white Ford truck.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about two bodies near Sheffield Road, just beyond the Iredell-Davie County line, on Friday. Both bodies, identified as Cynthia and Gregory, had gunshot wounds, and the murder weapon was discovered close by.

Analysis of evidence from the scene suggested that Gregory had shot Cynthia before turning the gun on himself. Davie County Sheriff J.D. Hartman expressed his sorrow over the tragic conclusion of a deeply concerning case, extending his condolences to the affected families and loved ones.

Cynthia had recently initiated legal separation proceedings, alleging cyberstalking and accusing Gregory of planting a tracking device on her car. Court records also noted Gregory’s erratic behavior, his attempts to isolate Cynthia from her family, and his unwillingness to work or contribute to household expenses after their 2012 marriage and subsequent move into the house she had previously shared with her late ex-husband. The court ruled in her favor, granting her sole possession of their shared residence. The abrupt disappearance of Cynthia and the ensuing grim discovery have stunned the community.

In a heartfelt social media post, Cynthia’s son expressed his anguish and disbelief at his mother’s death, likening the situation to a nightmare. He wrote about his struggle to come to terms with the reality of never being able to tell his mother he loved her again.

While the authorities have closed the case, stating that there’s no ongoing threat to public safety and no other suspects are involved, they are still interested in learning more about the couple’s activities between Wednesday and Thursday.

Anyone with information that could help in this regard is encouraged to contact the Davie County Sheriff’s Office.
